My daughter (15) has lost 50 lbs since school let out so she needs EVERYTHING new from her toes to her head.
WOW! Congrats on 50 pounds! may i ask how she did it? I am so happy for her. I am sure she is on cloud nine!
She is on cloud 9! She was so happy to be able to fit back into normal size close and be able to get real Junior size stuff again.
I am more than happy to share her story... but I will warn you, it is a long one, I,being a proud momma, can't just tell you the how, without explaining the why...so don't want to derail your PTR, but here it is since you asked =) If you don't want to know the story, just skip on by the rest of this post.
Derailment commence:
She has had a struggle. She has always been a bit of a heavier girl... but usually around size 13/15 in Juniors. She has been part of the Color Guard (or Flag Core as some schools call it) for the high school since her 8th grade year (3 years). Our band here is a very hard core competition band. Last year at the start of performance season in September, she was doing a toss and missed the catch. The flag poles are weighted (they weigh about 25 lbs) and the flag pole came down on the top of her head and it knocked her out. She came to not even able to remember what had happened, only that she was on the ground. When I got there to get her, she couldn't even put a sentence together to tell me what had happened and her pupils weren't dilating, so off to the ER we went. She had a really bad concussion. They almost admitted her to the hospital for observation, but when they gave her some anti-inflammatory medications, it helped and she started making sense so they sent her home with me. 2 days later, I was at work, and got a call from her, she had fallen off the coach and she couldn't get her balance to get up and she between her sobs of pain and fear said that her head felt like it was going to explode. I had to call the squad for her before I left work and met them here and we were back in the ER with her. She had a relapse of the swelling from the concussion and it was effecting her equilibrium. She was pulled from all activities and was out of school for 46 school days (9 weeks ). She was not allowed to do ANYTHING, not even walk around the block. Only inside activity was reading and very short spurts of watching TV (no more than 1/2 hour at a time as they were afraid of her having seizures), so she gained weight at an alarming speed because she was not allowed to do anything. They JUST finally released her from her concussion back to full activity levels at the end of May this year. (yep, you read that right....9 months we were going to concussion specialists and Nero-psychologists because she was having problems with balance, thought retention, nausea, blurred eye sight, severe headaches, and verbalization). During that time, she became extremely depressed and started eating terribly and put on over 75 lbs. She was 15 and was weighing in at 265 lbs where she had never even been over 200 before. This of coarse made her depressed and that got even worse when we had to start going into the plus size clothing for her (and young looking clothing for a +size teenager is not easy to find). AS soon as they released her, it became her priority to get the weight off. Her and I put together an acceptable/unacceptable meal plan. (I had gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago and lost and have kept off 160 lbs, so dieticians are my specialty. LOL) We made a plan for portion control and eating smaller amounts more often to keep her metabolism going. We both talked about her not getting defensive if I say something to her about not making good diet choices and made sure we were on the same page about helping, not hurting. With that understanding, her meals became healthier, smaller, and more frequent. Then we implemented daily excersize back into the picture, Once all of that was in place she just started to melt away. When we took her to her doctor for a follow up apt 2 weeks ago, she weighed in at 215 and started dancing around the office. I think she finally got to see what her hard work has done this past Saturday when I took her clothes shopping for school and she was able to fit back into 17's in Juniors. She started crying happy tears when she was able to button the pants. She is still sticking with it even though she has gotten to a more "acceptable" weight... she now has set her sights on a new goal. It has gone from a goal of " I want to wear normal Junior size clothes" to I want to get 175 lbs. I have told her if she maintains the good healthy diet and the very important portion control and daily excersize, even if it is just something as simple as walking home from school instead of riding the bus, that she will meet her goal quicker than she realizes. She also has come to realize that now that she has gotten through the "let it go" phase of unhealthy foods, her body craves better choices like fresh fruit instead of pizza. She has learned that she has to allow herself the magical "cheat" at least 1 x a week or she will become angry about not being able to have the really indulgent stuff, but it has become a normal thing for her to grab a granola bar instead of a candy bar because it is what she is used to now.
