What do you think school will be like in the fall? UPDATE page 29 for Mass.

Is that a school or just office work? (I’m getting at if she is gone, does someone else come in or does she just have an empty office/work from home?

With teachers we HAVE to have a sub, and then that makes me wonder, if someone even suspects “The rona” (sorry I just think it’s funny to call it that) would there even be a sub willing to expose themselves?

And would they also have to send a note home to all parents that it’s suspected someone has it and is being tested/quarantined?

I just retired and will sub so I can pay for my health insurance. My DH is covering me, but it's still almost 1k a month. He's a teacher as well.

In my state you can only sub a certain amount of days while collecting your retirement. The district can request a waiver on that rule if there is a sub shortage or if they need you as a long-term sub. My district will be requesting that wavier for me.

However!

DH and I have decided that I will only sub for those who know they need to be out for appointments, jury duty, etc. I will sub for friends in other buildings, or in my sister's building where she is the principal and will have know why the teacher is out. I will not take last minute sub jobs for sick teachers.

ETA - In my state as of right now, if any staff member or student suspects that they have COVID the build will be closed until the test results are returned. If the person is positive for COVID the school will be closed for two weeks. We will see if that rule remains in place for the fall.

thank you for the sub info. That’s what I think we will have happen. We had a hard time having enough subs as it is. If there are 14 coaches for the 5-person tiddlywinks team, ALL 14 of those coaches get to go and have a sub. That leaves very few left should something come up (like my migraines).

It is incredibly difficult to find subs everywhere in my state. I do think that next year it will be easier as it was after 9-11. Many people were laid off so they got sub licenses.

The past 2 years my district has contracted one sub for each middle school and the high schools. They would go in everyday and fill a position that did not have a sub if someone had called in last minute or if no one picked up the job. They were given benefits and were paid $20 more per day than a regular sub. But as you said, if there is a conference or event the 1 sub at each building still is not enough to cover all positions.

If we didn't have enough subs we would have to cover during our plan time for $25.

good grief! i can see a school constantly in a state of closure with this policy. i mean i get the caution but i think back to when i taught kindergarten and how esp. the kiddos that hadn't done daycare or preschool and built up some immunity would catch every sniffle and bug that came around. you look at what the medical community is using as a covid symptom list-

Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea

and that's the same as allot of non covid illnesses that little kids have repeatedly during their first year or so in a classroom setting.

Our district is preparing a variety of choices for next year - In-person, online and a hybrid. We will have to commit to one before the school year starts. Not sure how long the commitment will be (the whole year, until the new year, etc.).

Well, with all the precautionary measures that will be in place, even the regular flu, cold, HFM, etc, diseases will likely occur less often.

I agree. That policy was made a few months ago when they didn't know what they would be doing for schools this year. They have to change it for next year.

Everything is in limbo. I'm helping admin schedule what would be my classes for next year. As of right now, however, they are not filling my position. My admin is still pushing to replace me because if they don't they will have to hire two teachers to cover the amount of kids I had in each class. Anyways, they are preparing the regular schedule but will have a plan B, C, D, you get the idea.

Here in Canada, the province of Quebec has reopened schools everywhere but Montreal ( which is the hardest hit city in Canada right now). It’s estimated that about half of the students have returned. So far a total of 41 cases that include both students and staff . About 100,000 students have returned to school.
This is a good area to keep an eye on and watch to see what develops in the coming weeks. Hopefully we will get an idea of what September will look like.

I have one child still in school who is going into 11th grade in the Fall. I’m just in wait and see mode. I’m not afraid for him to get sick but I do feel a strong sense of social responsibility and don’t want to contract and spread Covid-19 needlessly. He’s currently working online and doing fine and could continue to if we had to. Our province is releasing their plan for the fall at the end of June. I want nothing more than to resume some sort of normalcy and resume school and travel .. I just have a feeling that we might be further away from that then we hope.

I work at the school district here and they sent out a survey to all the employees on what we would like to have done regarding Covid-19 and the 20-21 school year. It looks like all scenarios include school starting as usual but with different accomodations made depending on what percentage of staff want them. We will also be continuing distance learning for those who choose to keep their children home next year.

Our state was one of the last to close and one of the first to open and we had a low amount of cases. Life almost looks back to normal around here. Phase 3 starts tomorrow. I am sure the district and school board will know more once the surveys are closed and more time has passed. School doesn't start until August 17th.

Did they say how the distance learning will work if people choose to do that? I would imagine they would need separate teachers for that? Wondering how a teacher could do in person and online at the same time?

We will continuing using the distance learning program that has been used since mid-March but we would have a camera/computer set up in the classrooms so students who want to join in classroom learning can do so. We are planning on losing students but keeping the staff. No one is getting laid off and we will still be hiring but have to wait until the beginning of August. So any staff such as paras or other aides can also assist in online "hangout" style instruction.

Lots of bugs to still workout but that is the initial idea.

Has it been said they indicate the spread is going on within the schools that were surveyed? Or is it just they are reporting that students and staff tested positive? I think people's concerns is spread if that can be identified or not. It's hard to make a determination at this point if the school is a problem or not because of the handle we all have on the situation. However, perception of this can def. impact policies.

As an FYI your article is under a paywall (well you have to create an account just to read the article). I searched and found the information elsewhere. From the article I was reading it noted: "The province’s director of public health said Thursday that while there have been cases in schools, they have not caused any significant negative impacts." Obviously it would be a numbers game in how many were positive.

In France in mid-May they had individuals (and they didn't give details on who they were) who tested positive but because of the timeline it was more the prevailing thought they were positive prior to any of the schools being open (about a week of them being open).

Somewhat related to topic....I think this will make some here chuckle at the ridiculousness.

My county’s school board has been in the local news recently because the school district is facing an $8 million deficit for next year. In the face of that, they unanimously voted to retroactively give a raise to entire management dating back to beginning of the school year. Ok top of that, they’re giving a performance bonus to the superintendent who was supposed to retire this month. The superintendent was also asked to stay on through summer until they hire a replacement. (He’s about to make nearly $400,000 annualized salary).

Their response to critics?
“This has been tradition to reward for performance over the decades.” And for the amount of raise, they argued that they’re just giving the same % raises as teacher’s received through their union contracts in the past. Simply just that. Nothing more, nothing less. Lol.
Everyone scratches each other’s backs.

I can assure you there will be some losing their positions on the board in the upcoming years.

I need to have double knee replacement soon. I’ve got 5 to 7 pounds left to lose before I can schedule it. My plan was to do it over the summer as soon as school got out (6/5 for us), but I’m not too concerned if it takes me a little while longer to lose the weight. I may just have to miss the first few weeks of school in the fall.
I actually just saw my orthopedic today and he wants to schedule my surgery. I convinced him into another round of P/T and then I need to schedule it. I tore my rotator cuff some time ago and it is worsening, interfering with normal activities. I hate to miss school, it is not something I want to do at all especially in the beginning of the year. But, this upcoming year is different where we live, and there has not been a peep about what to expect in Fall.

Here in AZ, the governor announced this week that schools can resume normal operations in the fall. The next school year usually begins in early August.

Our kids' school sent out a parent survey today asking several questions about various measures they're thinking of doing in the fall. The school has 3 different plans in the works.

If my kids have to wear masks at school in the fall, that what we'll have them do. If we're required to check their temps every morning before going to school, we'll do that too.

One of our state's big 3 colleges announced yesterday that the fall semester would run from August 17th to November 23rd. Final exams will be online.

Cancelling fall break in October to keep students from traveling. And ending before the Thanksgiving break.

I think this is a good plan.

Our district is exploring all options. It is known for making sure the parents are happy at the expense of the teachers. I feel like we will be back in some form in the fall. Because of that I'm sure I will be exposed to the virus at some point. So I'm not really concerned anymore, I am going about my life, wearing my mask when needed, but seeing friends and family as I want. I'll go to the zoo this weekend and the newly opened casino next week. I'll try to keep the students safe but elementary kids (I work with all grades K-5) do not practice social distancing or particularly good hygiene so I'm not stopping my life. I know I'm going to be exposed in 2 months no matter what measures I practice.

Ugh, I hope you're wrong. We haven't open schools in Alberta and our cases have been on the decline for over 2 weeks now. Still no word about what school looks like in the Fall, I have a number of friends who have decided to yank their kids out of the school system and officially homeschool next year, rather than putting them through the utter gong show it is going to be when schools DO reopen. I'm with you though - I can't wait to get my kiddos back to school and back to their friends and teachers. They miss them all so much.
