Does "2 weeks to slow the spread" ring any bells?

Do you know any politicians that got recalled or voted out of office? How about and school board members? Literally nothing has changed. We better ALL be protesting or it's going to happen again. There's absolutely noting else that will stop it from happening.
Those are private businesses and some schools. Do you live in one of these areas? If not, why do you care? We'll probably see more of it....spots here and there where cases flare up. Then it's up to the individual school districts and businesses on what they should do.

Politicians will get voted out of office if their constituents are unhappy. In my area, it's the same with school boards...they are elected positions. And with respect to school boards...these are thankless jobs. Between covid and all of the other nonsense that a small percentage of parents are riled up about....who on earth would even want that job?

Same for public health. Do you have any idea how many thousands and thousands of people left the public health profession since the pandemic? People who held low paying public health positions (when compared to what they could make in the private sector)....had lunatics show up at their homes, threatening them. Public heath departments are vital for every community and we're left with far fewer people even willing to go into that profession.

Slippery slope, "two weeks to slow the spread". Have you really forgotten how we got here?

I don't consider parents protesting about a two-year long school closure to be "nonsense". The school board here went along with the LA County Public Health Dept., that was in lock-step with the Governor. All still hold their jobs. The parents were censored, that's when they were allowed to speak at all. Who was right? Well, if you ask the CDC now, it was the parents - is anyone keeping score?

I'm very aware of how we got here. We all are. We had mask mandates through 2021 as Americans spent a lot of that year, from late January through the end of the year getting vaccinated and boosted as new massive wave after wave moved through. We were still losing a lot of people, as states opened up more and more as the year went on and the virus found its way to the unvaccinated and the most vulnerable among us who were likely vaccinated.

We're in a very, very different place now. 96% of us have some immunity to covid, through vaccines or from the infection...or both. Some people may still die, but the numbers are infinitely lower than they were at the peak. We're losing 500 people per week now, so roughly 70 people per day....in early January of 2021, pre-vaccine....we were losing 4,000 people per *day*. Had we not mostly shut down and quarantined when we did in the spring of 2020....we'd have had several million more deaths. There's no question about that. And we had unnecessary deaths due to states opening up too early.

It's like a massive wildfire that has burned through the country....mostly put by now. There's a small flare up here and there, and it's handled by closing schools for a few days, shutting down an office for a few days...etc. There's not going to be any major mask mandates anymore...it's not necessary. It's necessary in small settings or individual settings to protect those most at risk. And it's only necessary because in an outbreak, people still get sick and they don't feel well enough to go to school, teach at school, go to work...etc.

Seems that people are still salty on both extreme sides of the Covid story and with valid reasons.

But hasn't the world learned a lot, lived through a lot and hopefully will do better in our lifetime should a pandemic hit us again.

Until then, why keep rehashing old tropes?

Can't we all just get along?

2 weeks to slow the spread might have work if we had 100% compliance, including complete shutdown. Since "essential" services were still allowed to operate and the definition of "essential" was very very broad in my opinion, there was just no way it was going to work to slow the spread let alone STOP the spread.

Here's a thought; sure, masking would theoretically reduces the spread if you wore one all the time, even at home - but of course, nobody wears a mask at home. So...
You know what absolutely improves COVID outcomes and thus reduces the spread? Being in better physical shape - it's without debate. So, instead of requiring ineffective masks, or worse, shutting things down (especially schools where nobody ever got critically sick), let's weigh everyone - get a baseline, then tell everyone they can resume normal activity when they achieve certain individual fitness goals. It can be a certain BMI, or maybe your time running a mile, or the number of consecutive pull-ups you can do. Too hard? Too invasive? At least you'd have some control over that. Setting restrictions based on the spread of a disease you have no control over is just insanity - but we did it. And we are doing it again? That's gets a HARD pass from me.

Here's a question that I have not found the answer to and is a little more related to this thread; Why is testing positivity rate a metric for anything? If you have a positivity rate of 5% then that means 95% of the people tested are not sick - confirmed, but you felt the need to get tested anyway? To me, that's a measure of paranoia and nothing else.

What fitness goals would you recommend to improve my almost non existent immune system? I’ll call my Neurologist tomorrow to let them know what Lumpy suggests..

Obesity was a huge risk factor for Covid. I think you knew what he meant. The majority of people don't have immune system issues.
A whole lot of people fall into the categories of “under 5” and “over 65,” having weaker immune systems simply because of their age. Then you add in pregnant women, those with immune disorders, those undergoing chemo, etc., and there is a significant percentage of our society who are high-risk for reasons beyond obesity. It’s not hard to be considerate of other people’s health.

The previous poster said she had an almost non-existent immune system that's not the norm. His point was people could lead healthier lives to improve their immune systems and their overall health. The majority of Americans are obese and out of shape. That is an indisputable fact. Why is that even an argument?

Prior to covid people with cancer and immune system issues protected themselves. They didn't expect the rest of the world to alter their lives to protect them. I also would not put young healthy pregnant women into the "fragile" category. Pregnancy is nothing out of the ordinary. Children have never been at risk so why bring up under 5?

And my point is that there are a great number of people who have no control over their immune systems and no way to exercise their way out of a high risk category.

Prior to Covid, we weren’t living through a global pandemic. The situation for the immunocompromised changed, significantly. A new disease, for which there was no cure, treatment, vaccine, or herd immunity was tearing its way around the globe killing thousands of people a day. Telling high-risk individuals to “protect themselves” because others can’t stand to be inconvenienced is not an appropriate (or compassionate) response.

As for your last few sentences, I don’t know what to say other than to tell you you’re misinformed. Pregnant and postpartum individuals have been classified by the CDC as high-risk from the very beginning. The immune system is suppressed during pregnancy to prevent the mother’s body from attacking the fetus. Good for the baby, but not so great for the mother who is more susceptible to infections and less able to fight them off. This is all fresh in my memory because I caught Covid twice in my first trimester and it caused great concern among my doctors. I was 41 at the time. Not all pregnant women are young (or healthy, for that matter). How did I catch Covid? My five year old brought it home from school because young kids can catch it and spread it just like anyone else. As well, young children can be more susceptible to infections because their immune systems aren’t fully developed.

“Studies have found that age may also be associated with risk of severe illness, and an evaluation of surveillance data from children aged >7 days and <18 years reported that infants made up a disproportionate number of severe acute COVID-19 cases.”

You are correct…the vast majority of covid deaths (82%)….occurred in people over 65. Immunity begins to wane in our 50s and just winds down from there. Or….we could blame it on obesity and begin fat shaming people.

Yea everyone, including myself thinks COVID is over, but it is still quietly killing people
I’ve been trying to explain this to people like my elderly aunt but since it’s no longer front page news she thinks it’s over. She is in her 80’s and her boyfriend is 90. They go out to eat and to casino all the time. She says to me Diane you are a nurse I can’t believe you think this is still happening! It’s just like a bad cold. 🙄My husband and I have not caught it yet. There are certain things that make you more likely to not do well and to wind up on a ventilator and I have all of those. So I’m super cautious. People are definitely still getting it and many are still dying. Staying home was the responsible thing to do.

To each their own- I would have just continued on with life as usual. Covid is just like a cold or a mild case of the flu now- not as big of a deal as it was in 2020- the strains are so much weaker now.
That is absolutely not true for every person who gets it. There are still virulent strains out there and there are still people who are very ill and some of them are dying. It seems to me a very selfish attitude to say if you believed you had Covid or Influenza that you would just carry on and expose others to it. But hey I’m only an RN with 39 years of experience so I’m sure someone getting their information from Faux news knows much better than me.
