Wine and Dine 2015

Just finished a nice 4 mile run and it is definitely humid here in Delaware. I SO need it not too be too humid for this race! After all this work and build up I don't want it to super suck!
My DS17 was sent for blood work and a culture to see if he has mono, won't know until Friday morning. He definitely has some kind of virus. The doctor said he should rest for a few days and not go to school tomorrow or Friday. I guess he doesn't understand a high schoolers schedule these days. He already has to be at school early tomorrow for a test make up that he missed yesterday. No way he is missing 2 more days

Okay so I peeked at the AccuWeather site real quick and there's big bright sun showing all week up until Friday as well as Sunday and Monday with race day Saturday showing mostly cloudy with a few showers, that's a really weird forecast for so much sun all around one somewhat rainy day which just happens to be the Wine and Dine half.My theory is this is the forecasters must know about the race and want to annoy all the runners who are obsessively looking multiple times a day at the forecast.

I haven't posted to the Wine and Dine thread since the 2013 race :(
I am super excited to run next weekend, of course I signed up for the 5k and the Half and had an injury in September that has kept me from running for the past 5 weeks. I had a great base, was running 30 miles a week with a ling run on the weekend 9 -11 miles. I have since been riding the bike a lot and just did a 3 mile run to make sure I could run at all. Being male, I have not had the injury checked yet, I did not want to hear the you should not run in the Disney Half so I just didn't go to the doctor.

I could run 3 miles this past weekend and ran a 5 miler yesterday, leg is tender today, but I will be able to run the half and I am looking forward to the after party.

My plan is to run another 5 miler and maybe a 7 miler this weekend. We leave wednesday and I may do a short 2 mile run on arrival. Then it is nothing but parks, fast passes, pool time at my happy place.

Costume is ready for the 5K with kids this time around. Video is gone but here is my recap from the weekend in 2013 - http://bit.ly/1jSoXw1

See you all in a week or so:earboy2:

I know the weather's going to change 7 thousand times before I leave, but I like knowing what to plan on packing! Then I can figure out what luggage size I'm going need.

Hey, did someone here have hamstring issues??
Or
.... Did someone here NOT have hamstring issues?!? ;)

This was in my mailbox, thought I'd share tips to relieve hamstring tightness:

Posting to marathon weekend too, apologies for doubling up!

Good stuff, it goes to my bookmarks. Too much, too little, too late for me, I'm afraid. Nothing new during taper. Like my runs all core work is at half volume too. Shoot, my calories are reduced. I'm stuck with the hamstrings I brought to the dance.

Very good article and sounds almost exactly what I have,I legitimately pulled my hamstring about 2 years ago while stepping awkwardly unto a curb and it was immediate pain where I had to stop running. What I have now is less severe as I was able to do a half 3 days after first feeling it and did not happen right away like the other time. What really stuck in the article was when it said to stretch my hamstring laying down which is what I always do but I remember a few days before in my run club they were stretching us out a while standing and I remember trying to go too far down to reach my toes and I really think this is when it may have aggrevated it.I usually stretch by myself before and for whatever reason I followed along this time.I have pretty strong legs, kind of like a mix between runners legs and bodybuilder legs so they're not all that flexible and that stretch may have affected the muscle.Another thing the article pointed out is how leg curls strengthen the hamstring,I do plenty of leg exercises like leg extensions which strengthen the quads but I never do any legs curls, think I'll start working those into my gym time.

@DOOM1001 and other who are not all that flexible, I highly recommend going to yoga once or twice a week. Not only will it strengthen your core and your legs, it will also give you great stretches for your legs, hip flexors, ITB, shoulders, and back. Those are all areas that tend to get tight when running frequently.

I've had others suggest that as well, definitely will have to try it,thank you!!

I live in a very rural area and there are no yoga classes anywhere within an hour of me (I checked). Can you (or your wife - she teaches yoga, right?) recommend a good yoga DVD? I really want to start but all I have is Bob Harper Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga DVD, lol. Thanks! :)

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 And I'll add that even if you are quite flexible, yoga is so very good for the mind, body and spirit! I'm a former dancer and have been practicing yoga for almost 20 years: I've been told I'm "too" flexible for running. Whatever. All I know is that when I try traditional, static, strength training, I get injured. When I practice yoga (and Pilates and ballet) regularly, I avoid injury. And I'm a happier, more peaceful person. So I'm sticking with it :)

Personally, I'm a big fan of Rodney Yee's yoga videos. BUT I'm going to issue a huge disclaimer here: yoga is not a competitive sport and MUST be approached by the new practitioner with caution. It's all too easy to do too much, too soon, and wind up injured, especially without a qualified instructor to assist. You may want to start by hitting up the Internet: I know Sage Roundtree offers yoga specifically geared toward runners and I believe her videos are online. And I feel like I've seen yoga for runners videos on Runner's World.

You go to yoga all the time, right? ;)

(Says the one who hasn't been to yoga for the past 2 weeks...I'm going tomorrow, I swear!)

Runner's World has a yoga section with some videos!

For Smart Phones, there is an app called Fit Star Yoga. It guides you through the poses and then you can rate it how feels if it was too difficult or ease for you. It works well for beginners.

Could not agree with this more! I think a big, common misconception is that yoga is just all gentle stretching, and while it can be gentle stretching and no more than that, it can also be pretty tough!

I've been telling myself for two years I need to start doing yoga. My flexibility is horrible and my core is pathetic and weak.

Yet, I still never seem to start. Maybe this winter. :)

Ummm, right, yes, of course I do. :rolleyes1

I'll ask her for her suggestions and update this post when I hear back from her.

Yoga is like the first thing that falls off my schedule during training. :( It shouldn't be, but it is. That and strength training. Before I got back into running I was doing yoga once a week and pilates reformer once a week, and my core strength was a lot better. Now it's poop. :)

I am limited by the schedule at the gym because I use BodyPump for strength training (yeah, I'm not going to get body builder muscles in there but when I was going 2x a week, I was building strength :)) and my gym is where I practice yoga. I really enjoy doing classes at the gym but sometimes it's really hard to change things when you find a class and an instructor that you really like. I like to run Tue/Thu/Sat. I like to spin or do step aerobics on Mon/Wed, and those days are non-negotiable because the step class is only on Monday and the spin instructor I like is only on Mon/Wed. This leaves me trying to fit yoga and strength in around that and since there's really no Friday classes at the gym, it's either go on Sunday when it's crowded and is usually my long run recovery day, or going back to the gym a second time during the day when I've already done something. I need more days of the week!

This is my problem too! I try to have 3 runs a week, 2 body pump classes and 1 yoga session. But yoga is always the first thing to fall off and I don't stretch enough outside of it. I agree that we need more days, preferably weekend days :)
