Cam Newton Insults Female Reporter

But the men do - and that's what is wrong with it all. Those fat old men, going on and on about nonsense half the time. At least there's a mute button on the remote.
You, personally, may use the remote when you realize that the man you are watching doesn't meet some personal standard.

But the majority of viewers don't change the channel when the beautiful woman comes on.

Sorry, we are back to my statement that sex sells. And the networks know it. Any network hiring overweight, unattractive women, would quickly go down the tubes.

Sure, you are right on that. What's does that have to do with female sport reporters being taken seriously? A previous said one thing that would help is if the female reporter weren't always so attractive. Why should their attractiveness matter when it comes to being taken seriously?
The issue of looks when it comes to who is being hired is a different issue than how they are treated on the job.

I think disrespecting women is a whole lot worse than cheating at some silly game. It's just a game. We play games, and whether someone wins, loses, cheats - it's just a game and the world doesn't implode. But treating half the earth's population as being somehow less than the other half? That's important to point out and correct.

I wish they had the same standard for the men, at least. I'm tired of looking at fat old men - especially the ones who can't even speak in full sentences, or ramble on and forget what they were talking about. Or have the vocabulary of a gnat.

Yup - the double standard is horrible. I'd like to be able to complain about the fat old men, or wait, I have :)
I'll admit I chose my words poorly last night. I don't really see this as disrespecting women. I see a woman that felt insulted, then tried to make a big deal out of it. As I said, I'm not a Can Newton, but if she wants female reporters to be taken seriously in the NFL, she's going to have to develop a thicker skin. If women start whining about not being taken seriously, the players will stop talking to them at all. There goes the jobs. They're not going to dump the players. They'll drop the women.

NFL is a business. This is not a playground game of kickball. There's a lot of money involved in this "game." Cheaters cost other teams & players money not to mention the average citizen that has money invested. I honestly don't know what to think about anyone that thinks it's not bad to cheat, because it's a game. IME, it's usually only the cheaters who think that.

Disagree. She wasn't/isn't a celebrity, just a journalist. It's pretty obvious to me why her prior behavior wasn't a concern to anyone. Cam is the face of a franchise and has endorsement deals with some of the largest companies in the U.S. If you don't get the difference between the situations, I don't know what to tell you.

Like you said, she is a journalist. Her public statements, especially racists statements, should be a concern to everyone, including her employer.

What an NFL player doesn't repsect a woman? Wow those men are such stand up guys I am shocked.

Really? Painting all the players with the same brush is a bit much.

I don't like what he said but to me this incident alone isn't that big a deal. People say things and sometimes what comes out of their mouths is stupid. I can't really get upset about this.

I agree. Let's face it, Cam sucks at interviews - he blew it here as well. He's sexist, but is it that big of a deal? I do hate that female reporters get treated like they don't know crap about the sports they're covering, however. Many of them probably know more than their male counterparts these days.

Whenever someone is hired for a reason other than that they are the most knowledgeable best experienced, people don't, and shouldn't, take them seriously.

Think about the brother/son/daughter/whatever that is hired and made director in a company. Why should anyone take them seriously?

Sorry, but if you got the job because of your looks, then many people aren't going to take you seriously. She knew that going in.

He didn't say anything about their qualifications or if they are good at their job though.
When discussing female sport reporters being taken seriously (and that's what was being discussed in the post he quoted) to say "I think one thing that would help is if sideline reporters didn't always have to be so damn attractive", that's absolutely implying attractive women are taken less seriously. That has nothing to do with their qualifications or knowledge.

Yes really, is something like this really a surprise when you are talking about an organization that has no problem keeping wife beaters, murderers and thugs in their employ. I realize people overlook that because they have some skill to thrash eachother in order to get a ball up the field but I don't.
Besides it was a joke, lighten up.

Many of the fat old men are former players and/or coaches though & that gives them a level of credibility that a fat old woman simply doesn't have. Or, they're broadcasters who were young & thin when first hired and have paid their dues. Suzy Kolber is 53 now. She's highly skilled & highly respected, but she too paid her dues.

I do agree many of the former players & coaches are just awful. And they stay on air far longer than their relative "celebrity" should warrant.

When you lump everyone in an organisation together in the manner that you did, it's not a joke. If I did that to a group of women people would crucify me.

No, I'd laugh at your joke. I don't get offended by every little thing someone says.
Just because you don't find something funny doesn't mean it isn't a joke.

Oh, believe me. I GET the difference between the situations.

Are there any threads here on the DIS about her racist comments on social media? Meanwhile, we are 3 pages deep regarding his comments.

As a black woman, I find her posts offensive.

Did you start a thread in order to discuss her comments?

Nope,

I just popped in to see which side would be condemned here. Since I have been on the DIS for 16 years, I knew exactly what I would find.

Ok got it.
You came on to a thread specifically about Cam Newton insulting that woman to see which side would be condemned. It is pretty clear by the title what you would find.

You have an issue with people not discussing what she said, yet you didn't bother to start your own thread to discuss it.
That is some strange logic you got going on there.

Actually it's all part of the same issue so why wouldn't it be discussed here? That is done all the time on discussion boards.

There isn't a "side" here.

In one instance, you have a major celebrity who has a history of controversy who said something this week.

In the other, you have someone none of us have ever heard of before who said something several years ago.

I'm sure millions of people none of us have ever heard of before have said ugly things several years ago. But, we don't know who any of them are, nor do we care to know. So, whatever they say doesn't really matter to the public at large.

Here's what I don't understand...

Who cares if he's sexist or not? Companies that use him as a spokesperson can decide to drop him or not. As far as the league, it doesn't affect how he plays or the games he plays in, so why should they care? As for the public, it doesn't affect how he plays or the games he plays in, so who cares? I'm sure there are other sexist (along with racist) athletes. Does it change the way they play?
