New security measure: Do not disturb signs being Removed!

As long as they are not knocking on my door at 6 am I'm fine with it.

No kidding. I was traveling for work a while back. One night I got back like 4 or 5 AM from a site and forgot to put up the DND sign. A couple hours later...BANG, BANG, BANG, Housekeeping. Go Away. BANG, BANG, BANG, Housekeeping. Go Away. BANG, BANG, BANG, Housekeeping. I ended up having to get out of bed, go to the door and tell them to come back ALOT later.

So what is a sweet little housekeeper suppose to do if she or he walks into a room full of automatic weapons, amno and a deranged person?! o_O Or is it security personnel doing these checks?
Why not scan luggage instead? Once and done. If luggage is taken directly by Magic Express is it not deemed "airplane safe?" Can they tighten that up with MCO to make it a fully secure handoff?
So they would just have to scan guest luggage arriving by car and small carryons? Have a destinated door for guests arriving with shopping bags or luggage?

Values and Moderates are outdoor rooms. They would have to check every car coming in. Can you imagine the backup that would create and it would still be easy to slip stuff through. Pure security theater.

This will do basically nothing for security. Just more theatre. The vast majority of mass shootings happen with weapons carried on the shooter to the scene in one trip. Even for a Vegas style stockpiling, it would only shorten the time frame from a few days to ~20 hours. You can carry up a ton of guns and ammo in 20 hours. Not mention, guns and ammo can be hidden from someone just doing a quick glance.

So if we can't stop something 100% of the time guaranteed we should do nothing? We shouldn't try to lessen the chance of something happening?

I'll say it again, I highly doubt Disney will be inspecting every room every day. This simply gives them the opportunity to check a room, just in case. And many of the reasons given for people not liking it, as in being interrupted when taking a shower, or anything they want to keep private, can still be kept private by throwing the latch on your door.

I think the drugs that housekeeping could/may find will be overwhelming. Not a meth lab, but personal use amounts. They may not care and probably won't open safes, but I think if taken to extremes, this could become problematic for WDW.

We should do something valuable. Not something worthless that unnecessarily disturbs guests.

I think b/c it’s one isolated incident & sometimes it gets ridiculous that companies overcompensate. And, let’s call it what it is...it’s a change to protect their liability not b/c they really care about guest safety. Everything is about lawyers & $$$!! And how’s that going to work in the dog resorts that were supposed to put that on the door to make sure staff didn’t come in?

My guess is there was a legitimate safety concern from other back channels, and possibly multiple times of it being reported to them, that prompted this.

Exactly @cmwade77 , the DND sign meant don't knock at all.

Now the "Occupied" sign means, knock until I answer.

So, if my health causes me to need a nap, I am just out of luck because here comes Susie Housekeeper to bang on my door until I open it, every single day. Day after day. Same thing if we are showering or doing something else. Bang, bang, bang, until we open the door and tell them to come back later, much later.

Then of course, the 8am wake up door knocking on check out day. It was bad enough if you forgot to put out the DND sign. Now, you don't have one to put out.

I really am not concerned about raising alarm bells. I'm concerned about a little peace and quiet.

Glad a nap is more important than a two minute safety check that may save lives, god forbid, someone used the hotels as a launching point for something horrific.

Again. The World is private property. They can do as they please to make sure that anyone there is being managed.

It’s symbol over substance. There are ways that might “save lives” as you say. But this is just a CYA so if something happens the lawyers can claim limited liability.

If they really wanted to save lives, they could simply take the door off of the hinges and leave it off. There. No one can hide anything. I mean really, if it saves just one life, it is worth it. Right?

Honestly? Yes, my nap is more important than this security theater.

As this was rushed in at monorail resorts only to begin with, it seems to me that they thought there was a credible threat.

So, theatre or not, to me it is good that they are doing something extra in response to a possible threat.

This theatre alone may have prevented a mass attack on MK yesterday for all we know.

To those thinking of bringing their own signs or leaving the "room occupied" sign on permanently, I wouldn't bother.

If I was Disney, I would maybe check those rooms more often than the ones without signs! - what are they hiding!?

Then stay off property.
Yes for the reservations that are able to be canceled I am going to do so as soon as the changes hit those resorts, instead I'll stay at the four seasons and swan and dolphin where I expect we'll be treated with respect.

I wonder why Disney is doing this so quietly and not making everyone aware on their web site or emailing those with reservations? Maybe because they know how ridiculous it is?

I wonder how this affects cancellation policy? I would hope Disney would allow cancellations and full refunds. Although maybe pass on the guests details to the friendly government security services...

Will be interesting to see if other hotel companies follow with this policy as it's potentially just moving the liability to them instead.

Love the lawyers and liability talk. Apprently none of you are aware of TRIA on GL policies if such a event is deemed a terrorist attack.

That’s if it’s deemed a terrorist attack. This is still likely a CYA. And lawyers & liability drives most things is this highly litigious society. Not pixie dust & guest safety. Ppl are currently suing the hotel in Las Vegas & will probably settle.

I fail to see why CYA is so horrendous here.

After defending 100's of GL claims all over the country, most idiotic cases never even make it to settlement. They just go away.

There is a serious liability issue with the Las Vegas situation, and thus any other high profile hotel.

And just think, everyone who stays in Disney resorts gets to pay extra for this "service!"

Another good reason why we stay off property!

FWIW, unless they are searching your luggage or using dogs to sniff them, this is security theater. It may catch an amateur, but not someone who knows what they are doing.

Everyone making all these assumptions need to understand that when you're at the resort you have an RFID tag on your magicband. Disney pretty much knows where you are and how you got to the resort and park. If you flew and took magical express you're probably less likely to be bothered. If you drive there then maybe you're flagged. If your room hasn't been opened in a day and you haven't traveled far from the room then you're likely getting an extra visit. If you're traveling normal patterns you may not notice any change. Disney has had magic bands since 2013 and been gathering park movements of guests since day one of implementation. It's extremely likely they have data showing them normal movements and can track unusual movements which may flag security.

Point taken. The only recourse? Stay off property

I think this is a smart move by Disney. I have absolutely no problem with it, come on in. We just got back a few days ago and our rooms did have the "do not disturb signs" on them while we were there. We turned down mousekeeping for a $60 gift card but we noticed someone still stopped by to open our curtains and adjust the room temperature.
