How much do you pay for parking at HS?

We have a falling sophomore who will be driving to school next year if a parking pass is available. The falling Juniors get to buy theirs first the last week of school and then the falling sophomores get to in mid-July.

We just found out the county raised the price of a parking pass at all the HS from $75 per year to $90 with no explanation of the needed cost increase.
Our high school doesn't (or didn't at the time all our kids went) charge for parking. Seniors are guaranteed a pass, and then they do "first come, first served" for Juniors until all spaces are full.

OT - what's a "falling Sophomore/Junior"?

Thanks for asking. I was wondering the same.

I also wondered about "falling sophomore/junior." I've heard of rising sophomores, but never falling ones.

$35/year at my kids' high school. (Price is not pro-rated if you buy mid-year.)

I think, not advancing to the next grade with most of their classmates, yet old enough to be licensed and drive to school.

Still guessing, parking passes for the coming school year might available in this order:
  • Promoted juniors (aka 2019-2020 seniors)
  • Non-promoted juniors ('19-'20 juniors)
  • Promoted sophomores ('19-'20 juniors)
  • Non-promoted sophomores ('19-'20 sophimores)
  • Possibly incoming sophomores held back earlier, entering high school able to drive

We pay $60/year and it’s a lottery basis for seniors only. If by some chance there are still spaces after all the seniors who wanted parking got parking, they open it to juniors on a lottery basis. That doesn’t happen often.

I never paid for a parking permit when I was in school and I’m still a little annoyed that they charge here. It’s a public school and they’ve rebuilt the high school over the past three years to the tune of $17 million, and our taxes have gone up quite a bit, but we still have limited parking and have to pay for a permit...

It's $100.00 here.

Seniors get first dibs/the closer lots, and then juniors can apply for the far lot as long as there are still spaces.

Back a million years ago when I was in HS it was 5 bucks and they only sold so many passes. It was first-come first-serve. I really can't believe how expensive some of these fees are!

OMG. DD paid $20.

My kids are in college but it was like $75 per semester in HS. And a lottery for seniors only. And having it for fall did not guarantee you get it in spring. I put both my twins in the lottery and only one got it (which was all we needed but was glad I put both names in). ANd they were varsity softball and still didn't get a guarantee spot in the spring. They are sophomores in college (done now but were just sophomores) and we had hoops to jump through for parking again. And they also were on softball team and one DD is in teaching program and sent out to schools that can be 30 mins away. Other DD does volunteer firefighting. And still we had to wait and beg and wait some more to get parking pass. And paid like $30 for a semester.

I'm also wondering what a "falling sophomore" is.

I'm amazed the cost of some of these high school parking passes. Prices are much lower at the school where I teach, and our students still whine about them. One of their biggest complaints: why do teachers park for free while we pay? Our costs:

- $25/numbered parking space, good for one year. Supposedly this pays for upkeep of the parking lot, which I think is true -- it's in perfect condition.
- We do not discount for students who get their license late in the year, or students who graduate at the end of first semester. Students think this is very unfair.
- Seniors are allowed two days to purchase parking spots before the younger students (so they get the closer spots). They LINE UP at lunch to buy these; they really care about having prime spots.
- Senior class officers get spots #1, 2, 3 and 4 -- not sure if they have to pay, or if free parking is a perk for their service.
- Starting the third day of school, any student who's old enough to drive can purchase a permit; we don't have an issue with space. Our lot has never sold out.
- Parking without a permit (after the first week)? Parking in the wrong spot? $25/first and second offense ... one month's suspension of driving privileges for a third offense. This parking in the wrong spot thing is a problem; for example, my older daughter had an off-campus class first period when she was a senior, and other people constantly thought, "She's not here today, so I'll take her first row spot."
- $50 (plus the cost of paint) if you want to personalize the space -- you must submit your design ahead of time and come on the appropriate Saturday while it's supervised by an administrator -- the $50 is what it costs to cover your design with special paint at the end of the year so that next year's owner will have a plain space again. Students love personalizing their spots.

In the spirit of completeness, I'll throw this in:

- My daughter who began her education at the community college paid nothing for parking.
- The university she now attends charges $576/year for parking, which is completely outrageous considering half the parking isn't even on campus -- students have to take a bus to the parking lot where they left their cars.

Zero. I never heard of this before kids having to pay for parking at their high schools. Seems messed up to me.

This piqued my curiosity, so I checked our local high school.
In my town, it's $100 per year, seniors get first dibs. Interestingly, we recently moved from a more affluent town to a more blue-collar town, and the town we came from did not charge high school students for parking.

Free at our small private school. No idea about local public schools, but I paid $25/year when I was in HS 25 years ago.

I went to public HS where parking was limited (the school housed almost 2K students) so we had to pay for parking to get a spot. Mine was $60-70 for the year nearly 10 years ago so that price doesn't seem too shocking.

So, the school district gets out of paying to bus them and then charges for them to park?

I know, they wouldn’t always be able to drop a bus stop, but it still seems...greedy.
