"Talk to me, Goose..." TOP GUN: MAVERICK trailer drops

To get this one back on track... I LOVE Top Gun and was mildly ambivalent about this movie as I’ve found most “____ years later” sequels disappointing but I watched the trailer last night and... yeah I’m gonna need to see this in theaters!

I was never a Tom Cruise fan when I was younger but he gets better with age.
Now, Val Kilmer back in the day- Oh yes. Now, not so much.
His weight yo-yo'ed but he looks like how I'd expect someone to age.

I am not a Tom Cruise fan, never going to watch this. Another movie my husband can enjoy when I travel for work. Hope others enjoy it though.

He battled cancer so I'm sure that took quite a toll on him.
Before that though I don't think he was aging as well as others who were acting back in the day with him.

I haven't really heard of too many interviews of him. He was supposedly working on retraining his voice. This interview is from 2018 where he's still working on developing his voice. He actually didn't look too bad.

I'd think maybe they would use some sort of overdub, or they would have a backstory for why he sounds like that.

Val Kilmer was always an amazing actor. Better than Tom Cruise honestly. I am looking forward to seeing him in a role again.

Couldn't figure out how he didn't get an Oscar nomination for Tombstone. However, Cruise actually got much better as an actor over the years. I know there were higher profile roles, but his work in Collateral was just sublime.

Oh yeah Cruise definitely got better. But so many of his roles are basically the same person. I mean Maverick in fighter jet, Maverick in race car, Maverick has an attorney in the Navy 😂 (although A Few Good Men is one of my all time favorite movies).

Val Kilmer played a different person in every role.

His portrayal of Doc Holliday has to be one of the best ever. I could watch him in that role over and over all day. He made that movie less about Wyatt Earp and more about Holliday.

Tom Cruise had that stereotypical Tom Cruise role in his 20s of the young, cocky hotshot. But he grew. Not sure what happened to Val Kilmer. He didn't fall off the face of the earth, but he couldn't seem to stay in good roles.

I did really enjoy the first movie, but then came all the scientology crap. Won't ever watch another movie with him in it again - or any of those cultists.

DS met him last weekend. He said it was startling how he looked and sounded. It will be interesting to see how they work him in to the story, he would be my only reason to see it ... I don't need to see another movie where Tom Cruise is playing Tom Cruise.

Val Kilmer was more of a character actor than Tom Cruise and I think Cruise’s looks gave him more commercial appeal. Not that Val Kilmer wasn’t good looking, he was but Cruise had that all around American boy, frat boy look.

Wondering what would have happened if he had never got involved with Mimi Rogers.

Dh and I will be seeing it open weekend. I love Tom Cruise movies and have seen Top Gun too many times. I really hope it’s a good movie. I don’t want it to ruin my love for the first one. I love the last scene in Top Gun and since the lead actress doesn’t appear to be in the new one it concerns me.

With any Tom Cruise movie, you must do two things.
1. Accept that Tom Cruise, who once couldn't act his way out of a paper bag now can barely act his way out of a paper bag and move on.
2. Check your brain at the door.

If you can do those two things, you'll probably like the Tom Cruise movie. If you cannot, you'll probably enjoy it less.

I know it's not fact. However, military nerds go crazy over this sort of thing. Pilots certainly say that none of this is real because someone would die unnecessarily or they're fudging with reality. Active Navy Captains are rarely in their 60s, but movies often have these commanding officers pushing 70.

I've taken tours of ships and seen the board showing all the senior officers. Sometimes it's odd seeing how young the commanding officers of these ships are. Usually a Commander in his (and now her) late 30s.

Back in '85 when they made the movie, my friend's uncle was one of the Navy Pilots that filmed the action scenes. He was very proud of the work they did. Remember, this was back in the day before they had all the special effects they can do now.

Also, my dh was a military pilot (29 years, retired) and is still an active pilot with a major airline. He loves this movie! In fact, his least favorite part is Kelly McGillis. He said she ruined it with the romance part ... get back to the flying! :rotfl2: It is funny, he will rip apart other military movies, but not this one. Other pilots in his unit love it too. Top Gun managed to be mentioned in lots of discussions over the years with other "military nerds" but was never ripped apart. They knew the story line was fantasy, but they loved the flying!
