Long flight

As an Aussie who has flown to the States (and back again) 3 times in the last 3 years I consider myself a bit of an expert of long distance flying!

I wear pants that I've bought exclusively for flying. They are a very very lightweight tracksuit or yoga pant, although I think they look a lot smarter (I'd never leave the house in my trackies!). It's not a very flattering photo, but I'm wearing them here:

I then wear a tshirt or polo shirt on top. Then because either my origin or destination is cold while the other is hot (and because a hoodie is usually on my souvenir list) I'll wear/take a cardigan.

The other must have, as PPs have said, is a pair of compression flight socks. They absolutely make a difference! However, I always wait to put them on until the last minute - usually sitting at the gate or occasionally on board. When I reach my destination they are then taken off straight away too. I just find they are too warm otherwise.

I then wear black slip on Skechers. Easy to take off for TSA, comfortable for the long walks through the airport and they look fine with the flight socks.

I never sleep in what I wear to the airport. I bring a super comfy t-shirt and some sleeping shorts, change into them, and then go to sleep. I could give a damn what people think of my attire.

I don't understand - you do or don't wear the clothes, or are you saying you wear one thing to the airport, and then change your clothes when you get on the plane? Do or don't give a damn? I'm confused...

Don't give a damn

DH and I travel pretty regularly but this trip will be the first long flight that we're taking. 10 hours to Hawaii. We're supposed to get a cold front come in this weekend so it will be in the 50's and 60's when we leave Texas. I want to be comfortable on the flight but not look like a homeless person when we land. Any suggestions on where to get clothes that will be comfortable for a long flight but won't look like I'm a person who wears their pajamas to Walmart?
I always wear a full skirt on a plane for comfort, but not a long skirt: knee length or shorter (to avoid being singled out for extra TSA screening due to wearing billowy clothes). I also bring a cardigan with me on flights, in case it feels cold.

I do the same - though it is more about wanting to have on nicer clothes in the airport and to/from (though, on my last flight, due to turbulence near landing, I got off the plane in my "plane wear" and changed once I got to the lounge (and could shower!)

I have a big ziplock bag for my "plane clothes" (basically sweat pants and a long sleeved cotton shirt, plus changes of under things). Since I board early, I generally stow my carry-on, grab the zip-lock bag and change in the bathroom while boarding is going on. If I'm on a flight where they provide PJs (for United, that's a flight over 12 hours), I'll sometimes use those.

I can hardly tolerate using those disgusting plane bathrooms to pee, let alone do an elective wardrobe change in them.

Different strokes and all that jazz.

I dress comfy for personal travel, and if traveling for business I kick it up a notch.

OK. Some people might think that means tight athletic leggings/tights instead of medical devices. However, I've heard that anything that completely restricts the legs can increase the chance of blood clots.
They are labeled as "Compression" Stockings in the store and travel stores. Yes, they restrict to PREVENT blood clots, by preventing the pooling of blood.

I wouldn't fly that long in "nice" clothes. I'd change after landing if I wanted to look nice once I passed security.

One tip I got prior to a long train ride was to bring a thin sleeping bag. I got a fleece one that rolls up small enough to fit in my carry on bag, but I believe they have even smaller ones that are the thickness of a sheet. If you want to sleep, it helps make you feel cozy. The sleeping bag, a travel pillow, a window seat, an eye mask, and ear plugs mean I'm out for the majority of the flight. For those of you that like to fall asleep to the TV, set up a playlist of podcasts (or an audiobook) with soothing voices and that will help block any outside noise.

There was one flight where the woman next to me woke me us - TWICE! - when I had that get up on to ask if I wanted a drink and then a snack. Lady, does it look like I can about 3oz of diet coke or a tiny bag of peanuts?

Yea I get the plane bathrooms aren't glamorous, I wouldn't do it on a 4 hour flight. But for something 8 hours +, I gotta be comfy, and I gotta be able to sleep.

There's always the first class bathrooms in the upper level of an A380.

That's what I do when I can. But I only use my precious miles on super long flights to Asia or Middle East. If I'm going to Europe, I try to rough it in biz class.

You can get compression socks for running as well. Amazon seems to have a good selection, I have a few from when I was having ankle problems. CEP makes great ones and in fun colors.

I could never, ever change my clothes on board a plane. Nope, not happening for me. I wear comfy, smart looking clothes (Land's End Starfish Pants) and bring a cardigan or wrap in case I get chilly. I also bring an infinity scarf that I spray with my favorite Bath and Body Works fragrance....enough scent for me to smell if I have to cover my nose but not enough to annoy fellow passengers. I also have to have slip on shoes.

A pashmina is a travel staple for me along with leggings and a comfortable top. The pashmina can be used a blanket if it's cold and/or draped to add a pop of color to an otherwise black slate.

My travel outfit when I’m going from one cold place to another is leggings and a Lularoe Irma. But if I’m going from cold to hot weather, I wear a maxi dress (most of mine are from Amazon) and cardigan. As soon as the plane lands, I stuff my sweater in my carryon. I travel about 20x a year, wear a maxi about half the time and have never been prompted for extra security. (I do have TSA Precheck though.)
And pretty much any flight I take, even the short legs, I take off my shoes immediately and put on fuzzy socks :) I can fall asleep on any plane and stay asleep as long as I want.

Ooh yes! Another must! I unfortunately know from experience it's also useful if your flight is delayed several hours because 'the plane is no good' and the airport is freezing at 1am!

Another thing that I always wear on a long flight is a panty liner as once you take it off it's like having on fresh underwear.

I'll also add that if you don't already, make sure you've got a change of clothes, at least a tshirt, in your carry on as if something spills it is an awfully long time to be stuck in wet/dirty clothes. And make sure your bathing suit is in there too in case your luggage is delayed!
