I've experienced a little bit of satisfaction of watching the fallout when I left a job long ago in a completely different field and having old friends who were still there fill me in on the happenings and the skirmishes over the next year. A very close friend is going through this right now since leaving a job she held for 40 years since she left high school. One of her coworkers has already announced she's leaving, moving up her retirement because things are so off kilter without my friend there to keep all the plates spinning.
Another friend was a very experienced and respected nurse manager in a hospital system. Many months before they revealed any cuts were coming they brought in someone whose credentials I can't remember anymore, but it was definitely not heavily weighted on the medical end, nor did they have experience working in the medical field prior. My friend was given minimal information about why this position was created, merely asked to share some information surrounding different tasks she oversaw. After maybe close to a year with this person onboard my friend was informed that this new person was going to be taking over X amount of the tasks my friend had been responsible for. She knew it was strange because most of it was going to require a medical skillset a nurse would have, yet this person absolutely did not, but she attempted to transfer the tasks as required. It merely increased my friend's workload because she had to see to it that the end results were achieved with the false pretense that the other person was performing most of the functions. Within a couple months my friend received word while out on vacation that her job was eliminated. She was shocked, as she had worked there for over 20 years with a stellar reputation. The new "manager" continued to call and email my friend many, many times every day to get questions answered, just as she had when my friend was on the job. After several weeks of this going on some friends and family told her that she needed to stop responding to the requests for help because she didn't work there anymore. She resisted because it just wasn't her nature, but finally got angry when she realized they would continue using her for free if she let them.
