Disney Film Release Schedule through 2023

The Last Jedi made almost 800 million less than The Force Awakens
Worldwide. That's a huge drop, plus lots of negative chatter online about Disney's stewardship of the franchise.

Personally, I've loved all of Disney's Star Wars movies.
What's crazy is the Last Jedi was way better than Force Awakens. I almost didn't go to Last Jedi because of Force Awakens.

I do think with an annual movie people will get Star Wars fatigue.

Or get them to feature different/new characters and haven have unique tones/styles

There are multiple Marvel movies a year and doesn’t seem like the same fatigue (or potential fatigue)

Also just probably a problem of their own success - nothing is ever going to do as well as the Force Awakens so everything else seems like a big drop even though it is still huge numbers compared to 99.999% of movies

I liked The Last Jedi more than The Force Awakens too!

Part of it was the momentum Force Awakens had. To be honest I had not seen a Star Wars movie beforehand until Force Awakens and I went for the experience (and opening day was my birthday :P). It was so much of an event that of course Last Jedi was not going to match it. Nothing could ever really top the anticipation Force Awakens had. I think everybody always forgets about that when talking about the disparity between the two’s financial takes.

Personally I liked Last Jedi, I didn’t LOVE it. I had no problem with the characters or how they turned out to be, my biggest problem was (it doesn’t need to be a spoiler since I’m not specifying, and you should’ve probably seen the movie by now) the ending was dragged out way too long. I mean yes
I think the canto brigg segment does not help the story at all and the only reason why I think it was there was to introduce the kids taking care of the racing animals who were force sensitive, if you want to prove me wrong, please, I actually want you to and tell me why!
but I think people were most upset that their predictions, and of course the “men’s rights activists” ruined it (one of them being a janitor at the store I work at calling everyone snowflakes because it appealed to them since it showed women at all times and the men weren’t at their strongest. I mean Poe was amazing here but then again I can separate fiction from reality, but it also gave me a glimpse at how sad his life must be thinking that he felt like the superior sex over his obsession of science fiction films and working as a janitor... who am I to judge. I work retail and I post on these forums) but I don’t think that’s how it should be looked at. Allegedly everyone’s favorite, Empire got the same reception back in 1980. Ok that’s my reasoning back on topic:

I’m a huge fan of WDAS (Disney’s animation branch) and I only counted two movies after Frozen 2, is that correct? I hope not. Edit: it is, and the gap year is 2022, with all the untitled movies! Noooooo!!!!!

The Last Jedi had nearly the same opening as The Force Awakens. The most alarming problem is it didn't have nearly the same legs(staying power).

Word of mouth, rewatch-ability and the competition actually being fierce is what I consider it to be it’s (lack of) legs

Force Awakens was also the first Star Wars movie in 10 years and had some of the original actors that hadn't been on screen in 30 years. Last Jedi was the third Star Wars movie in 3 years.

Last Jedi was a meh for me. I only saw it twice, and once was free with movie tickets I got from D23. Contrast that with Rogue One, which I saw 5 times in the theater. I'm not entirely sure as many people hated it as the internet vocal minority would have you believe, but a lot of us didn't love it. I don't think it got a lot of repeat viewing money.

I even went on a Disney cruise and had the chance to watch it numerous times and just went in once to watch the end.

I think the reason that Marvel continues to thrive is that they at least try to diversify their movies. For instance, Ant Man was like a heist type movie, Guardians is your classic space opera, Winter Soldier was like a political thriller.

With SW they just keep giving us the same, except not as good as the first time.

I'm just answering your spoiler tag about the inclusion of the casino planet. I think it was there to give Finn something to do because Rian Johnson inexplicably could not think of anything else for him to do. He also needed to introduce another main character into the already crowded cast.

If you can't tell, I did not like those scenes at all.

Also, great job freeing the animals and leaving the slave kids behind. First off, I'm sure those poor kids won't see any repercussions for letting the animals escape. Second off yeah...Rose... I think she says some junk about freeing the animals was worth their time on the planet. The movie was too long as it was, just cut all that and then show some random kid using the force at the end, we don't need to know who they are.

we don't need to know who they are.
You just described my feeling towards the solo movie. The only character I’m curious about that I want to see a movie for is Maz, but that’s actually a decent theory as to why that scene exists. I don’t think anyone will know for sure. We could ask Rian but I don’t want to get roasted by him on twitter for a genuine question. I love him roasting the “you ruined Star Wars” people on there, it’s hilarious

I also don't want the Solo movie. I'm afraid it will ruin his character are in New Hope. But I'll still watch it.

I want them to Branch out with the movies. Go into a different time period. Either that or give me my rogue squadron movie.

LOL...the opinions and attitudes from the last few posters is a good example of why Star Wars is in trouble going forward at the box office

Yeah, I have a feeling the Solo movie will do much worse than Rogue One. I haven't heard many people excited about it and I think there is a much higher chance of hurting the character than helping. Han Solo is already one of the most developed characters. If they just had to do a movie from that prospective I would've rather seen it be about the Millennium Falcon, since it passed through multiple hands before Han got it.

Obviously this "film schedule" is for investors, not fans --- as just letting out a bunch of "untitled" movies coming out in 2-3 years doesn't really build any excitement, but does give investors some idea if their money is well spent.

Star Wars movies - Not sure why they are trying Han Solo in May as opposed to December. Just seems too soon after Last Jedi and will be too long until episode IX. Just an odd timing especially since you have Marvel movies coming out in the summer (though they did move up Infinity War (I am guessing to not compete with Solo). I think this timing decision of bringing out Solo so soon after the "fan" backlash of Last Jedi (considering most fans don't want a Solo movie) will hurt the franchise. No holiday to buy new toys around and the current toys are just sitting on the shelves anyway -- will the other merchandise (notebooks, bedsheets) shift towards Solo so soon when the trilogy was just a few months ago? The transition to Rogue seemed natural as it was a whole year removed from Force Awakens.

On another note, I am not on-board with the Disney Live-Action trend. I guess maybe they aren't for me and more for millennials who grew up on Disney, but aren't old enough to have watched all the cartoons in their childhood? My generation (Gen-X) are people who grew up on these animated versions of these movies, but I have no desire to see them. I know the story (backwards and forwards) .. I own the original cartoon versions and watch those with my young kids. I am not going to take my elementary age children to see the PG live-action movies (that may be too scary "real" in some parts) when there are plenty of new animated movies coming out from Pixar/Disney every year.

I enjoyed Maleficent because it was a different viewpoint, Cinderella was ok and I just haven't bothered watching Pete's Dragon, B&B and Jungle Book (even though they are available on Netflix) simply because I know the stories. I would rather spend my limited movie-watching time watching something original or something "come to life" (like a Star Wars or Marvel movie).

I could care less for a live-action Dumbo, Lion King or whatever else they decide to pump out.
