This Is Us- Season 3

 For some reason I just assumed it was a road trip - I didn’t pay much attention to the episode while DH was watching it. Do airlines have policies prohibiting travel for pregnant people past a certain stage? Is there anything about air travel itself that’s risky?

Usually doctors recommend women who are 8 months pregnant not fly anymore. I don't know if an airline would prohibit a very pregnant woman from flying, I never tried to fly late in any of my pregnancies, so don't know for sure. I believe the cabin pressure for a woman late in her pregnancy can trigger labor, of course you don't want to go into labor when you are 35,000 feet up in the air so that's why it's recommended women who are late in their pregnancy not fly. Now, Kate is early in her pregnancy, but her pregnancy is high risk, so going on a plane and dealing with cabin pressure might not be the best thing for her.

Kate was in CA. Remember when they were talking about the road trip, Kate was on Skype. I guess she flew back east for the road trip. I did not find it far fetched. She was so close to Jack, felt responsible for his death, has his ashes etc. I think the opportunity to have a piece of Jack and help solve the mystery about Nicky would be motivation for her to fly East. Also, she is so very close to Kevin and it seemed very important to Kevin to see this through and she probably wanted to support him as well. I'm not sure about pregnant women flying, but I thought it was fine up until the end of pregnancy.

Not sure if this is still the case, but I think at some point they require a doctor's note to fly. Not sure who would go around asking if someone is pregnant and demand the note though. ;)

For Kate it's definitely about her being high risk. But also about the fact that it's a cross country flight. You don't want to be that far removed from medical intervention for that long if something starts to go wrong.

Circulation and blood clots are also a concern.

Question, since several people have mentioned it: What is it about a lengthy car trip that would be particularly dangerous for a pregnant person? Just curious - I don’t really know anyone who has struggled with this sort of thing.

I assumed she flew from CA first, so I was also thinking about air travel too (increased risk of blood clots, and just being away from medical help in an emergency) but I remember in an earlier episode, she had to give up her singing job because of the extensive driving. I'm not exactly sure why - maybe still a risk of blood clots?

I'm kinda starting to lose interest in this show a little bit. I have had zero interest in the brother/Vietnam and the election storylines. The way they all do whatever they want but no one seems to work or bring in any sort of paycheck has always been a problem on TV but in particular seems especially bad on this show and also A Million Little Things. Kate obviously has tons of free time and money since she can zip across the US at will.

I like the brother storyline, but not into the election thing. They have briefly touched upon the work situations of all of them. They said in the past that Toby is an IT specialist. Kate was Kevin's personal assistant, then discovered she wanted to sing so she quit and did singing jobs. Kevin is an actor, girlfriend Zoey is a documentary filmmaker or some sort. Randall and Beth both out of work currently, unless Randalls newly elected position is his new job. They did show Randall a lot in his previous high pressure job, as well as Beth in her housing job. Rebecca and Miguel retired.

It was a road trip...from the east coast. But Kate had to fly all the way from the west coast before the road trip.

LOL, I understand what it is they supposedly do. My point is that it isn't just doesn't mesh even worse than usual on tv shows, to a hilarious degree. Kate hasn't worked for her brother for like 3 years and her singing jobs were open mic nights at bars and singing telegrams. There's money for a stint at fat camp and a round of IVF, but then she's selling off priceless collectibles for cheap because they need money so badly. But she's flown across country several times this year. Toby works, in theory, but can't imagine an "IT specialist" who suffered through a debilitating bout of depression and paid Kate's way this year had very good finances. Neither R or B has worked for a couple months at least, but at least he will have a job now, and assuming they are building up to her getting a new job soon.

Hope the show picks up soon with some interesting storylines.

I'm with you on this part of it. Everyone (myself included) loved that Toby had that model of the stadium built. And it felt good to see that shown in the story. But come on. They were just selling his stuff to pay for the nursery. Now he has money to pay for someone to custom build that? Someone has to be earning the income in these stories! And in my world, you don't just say "yeah I want to do IVF" and it happens the next month. There's all sorts of hand wringing about the financial side of that, complete with saving and budget adjustments, maybe even a home equity loan, to pay for something like IVF.

Yep and I understand all tv shows are like this. I just think it's even worse than usual for this show and the other one I mentioned. Since I'm not interested in the story lines, gotta find something to talk about ha ha, so hope no one's offended really, just being funny!

It drives my husband crazy, too.

I really don't understand all the anger at Jack. He went all the way to Vietnam when he was in the clear of ever being sent just because he wanted to be sure his brother was all right. As much as what happened traumatized Nicky, there's good reason to understand it likely traumatized Jack tremendously as well.

At some point there has to be recognition that ultimately Nicky is an adult and should have sought help himself in all these years, as opposed to laying his inability to attempt to truly deal with what happened at the feet of his brother not knowing it was an accident.

Well, this one made me cry. Very sad story. A little distracted though, because I was worried whether Kate got to go to the bathroom.

I can completely understand Jack staying away from his brother if he thought Nicky murdered a child.

I thought they were selling Toby's stuff to make room for the nursery stuff, not to pay for it. I just figure that Kate worked for Kevin and he's wealthy from acting and her twin so he probably paid her really well. I don't know, little stuff like this doesn't bother me that much I guess.

I caught up on both of the episodes I missed while I was in WDW and loved both of them!

Yes, that's what I got too, they needed that room for a nursery, so the stuff in it had to go.

I agree with that. I still loved the episode and was very moved by it, but I have conflicted feelings about that side of it. I don't think it's worth hating Jack over. He made a mistake keeping it a secret. His brother made a mistake putting that boy at risk. We are all flawed and we all make mistakes. Even the ones who seem larger than life. But to see Kevin turn left and choose a different path seemed so powerful.

I hope things work out well for Kevin as far as how this choice turns out. It is powerful that he felt the pull to do all of this based on seeking out a better understanding of his father and has ultimately responded very differently to the situation in a very rudimentary way. I am worried that Nicky will bring pain and destruction with him. As much love as Jack had for his brother I can't help but feel his decision not to introduce him to his niece and nephews was a very valid parenting choice. Notably the son who "is always bringing people home" didn't even seem to be a little bit drawn to the idea of bringing Nicky back to his home. I don't think it's simply the number of people at home, the distraction of taking up a council position and the tenuous situation with Beth that would keep Randall from moving Nicky in at this point. I think Randall might understand Jack's perspective on this.

I also thought it was to make room for the baby. Not necessarily about the money.

Not sure about the election story line but I love the Nicky/Viet Nam story line. (I allegedly have a Vietnamese half-brother from when my dad served so this search fascinated me.)
