Found old safe in my basement

This was the best thread I've ever read on the DIS!! I had so much fun. Thank you OP for sharing your adventure. I'm sorry about the mess you have to clean up and the lack of piles of gold in the safe. :rotfl:

However, I guess I am the only one who would think that finding the letter and solving the mystery was worth it? The letter seems so cool to me and figuring out the mystery behind the safe is even cooler.
Yes, now there is no more historic safe but that's okay. Yes, it's a piece of history but you just made your own history with your family and the DIS!

It was all very worth it, in my opinion. Once again, thank you OP and all the other DISers who made this week suspenseful, fun, and very Nancy Drew like.:grouphug: :woohoo:

Wow!! Just under 30,000 hits in 3 days is phenomenal! That has to be a record on the DIS!:cheer2:

OP, you certainly gave a whole lot of fun to a whole lot of folks... you and DH have been such good sports sharing your adventure with us. As Bob Hope would say, "thanks for the memories"... this is definitely an historic DIS thread! :thumbsup2

 Thank you so much for the closure.
I am soo sorry there wasn't something inside that would give you a trip to WDW or a cruise.
But thank you and thank you too agnes and others for the history lessons. I love history.
You photos will make an excellent story to tell your own grandchildren.

Ok, but you ruined a piece of History...there was a better way to Get into the safe, but you refused to do it. Oh, well.:confused3 YOU could have sold the safe to someone who was interested in it, IF you hadn't... A.Cut the hinges off and B. Cut a Big Gaping hole in it...now, you have something you can throw away in a dump.:confused3 :sad2:

dude chill out its a safe that you can buy on e-bay and stick the piece of paper in and no one would know the difference

Oh well, I guess I will have to go and exercise off the bag of candy I mowed through reading the entire thread yesterday, lol. OR...I could go and clean my home office, do laundry, return emails, clean my house, or DIS some more. I think it is gonna be the final one...thanks for a great thread.:goodvibes

I'm sorry that you didn't find a bucket of money in there.

It certainly was exciting. Thank you for returning to the thread to keep us posted.

This was the most interesting thing in my weekend, now I have to do laundry and homework, because this isn't here to distract me :lmao:

Can I go to bed now? :surfweb:

Who's next?? :hyper: How about Pursewatch. Some of you ladies have enough junk in there to fill a few threads!

Well I'm trying to find information on who a "Miss Mary Hamilton" (there are MANY Miss Mary Hamiltons) was in the Civil War era. LOL There's some sort of connection with her and Robert Henry Hendershot (cool kid!), the Keyes/Knowlton family and Douglas Boardman/Emily Boardman Sears (was this Sears any relation to Sears Robuck?). I have a photo album with these pics and more in it.

How does that do ya? :p

p.s. I'm an antique dealer/lover too but to be honest there REALLY isn't much of a market for big heavy safes like this one. Yes it's sad that it was destroyed BUT it wasn't in good condition to begin with.........although I still think the front frame and door would be great to recycle and use somewhere in your home OP!!

At BEST you MIGHT have been able to find someone to take it off your hands IF you paid THEM to do it. Why do you think it was left in the house in the first place? LOL

NO! I think it was well worth it too.....what a cool find!! Everyone keeps saying the safe was empty but it really wasn't! LOL And the little cash box inside?? And the wood front drawer???? Just those things alone have some value, don't think they're worthless.....but the note about an estate? That was just too cool for words!!

Thank you OP.....this was really FUN!!

Wow, just read through the posts since last night. Thanks to all of you for your support in my decisions. The value of the safe if I had sold it means nothing to me. I had so much fun sharing this with my disfriends, I wouldn't have done a single thing differently!

One more little bit of info for those still lurking. We also found this bank deposit slip which totally slipped my mind posting because it was blank. It is cool though because it has 190_ on it. Lyons National bank is still around. There is one in Lyons, but it has also branched out and has bank in my village. So very cool.

Thanks again to all who did research. And to everyone for being so supportive!!! If the thread exists in a few months when I have time to do more research, I will update if I find any family members in the area that I could give this letter to. That is my goal. As much as I would love to keep it, it is priceless to the family and that is where it belongs.

I have some really old concrete and metal if anyone is interested.....:lmao:

I was sick yesterday so just now got here to see what happened. And all I could think of yesterday was "I really need to check on the SafeWatch!" but just couldn't get to my computer.

I had shown this to DH on Friday night and asked him what he thought. He said if it was him he would get out an Angle Grinder and take the back or a side off! I just showed him the update with the pic of your husband and he said "See! I told you so!".

Thanks for keeping me entertained this weekend.

That is not a deposit slip... probably a counter check issued from the bank. But, how fascinating this all is!
