Have you gotten a COVID vaccine?

Elsewhere in my state is putting forth an effort to vaccinate 10K "health care workers, including dentists, chiropractors, optometrists, and home-health and hospice workers" I mention this because I've seen a few posters mention a few of these professions.

Our state announced the same today. They're setting up drive through sites for next week.

One of the first long-term facilities in the metro to have it happen.

Contained within the article: "Because of the vaccinations, family members will be able to visit starting Monday, with new guidelines and rules in place. It's this reason alone why many residents said, 'Yes,' to the vaccine."

That's pretty neat but kind of jumping the gun, no? You can still get infected before you get your second shot.

I honestly had the same exact thought truthfully...but I'm going to assume the rules they set forth will be quite strict (we're still under a mask mandate here in the county anyways). It still leaves it open no doubt but maybe they have guidance on the matter that we're unaware of (the article didn't really go far into that). I suppose in this dark tunnel they thought to give some light but I have heard elsewhere where they will be holding off on allowing visitors until after the second dosage for other long-term care facilities.

As much as I want our older at risk population to get it yesterday, I also whole heartedly support teachers being at or near the front of the line. I'm kind of shocked that's not the case for so many states after the way education has suffered for the past year. As anxious as I am to get it, I would give my spot to anybody teaching in person.
I agree! Our Gov announced today a new push and money to get in person school back up and running in Feb/March. Great. Except he didn’t move teachers up the line for vaccinations and the unions are already saying their teachers won’t go back until they can be vaccinated.

Moderna shot earlier today (I go into LTC places). Holy sore arm, way worse than flu shot. Mild headache but that could be because of weather (snow/pressure system). CVS came to facility to administer and you needed to have your paper work in. They had staff go first but a few residents wanted to get it over with early so they of course got priority! A couple of them were so nervous, staff so sweet with them. One resident said she’s scared of the new vaccine but she’s willing to do anything to see family in person and hug them again (yeah no dry eyes after that). Please remember that LTC have had horrible outbreaks and account for a very large portion of deaths right from covid.
I get the frustration over elderly at risk parents not up for first vaccines but they aren’t living with hundred other people who have to also share staff (that have to go out into community). My own mom is immunocompromised due to lymphoma - she and dad haven’t seen grandkids since a socially distanced wave-by this summer.

There aren’t any guidelines or recommendations as to when the swabbing can decline in frequency or when more visits can start or even when we can get residents back to communal dining and get them socializing again yet. But if we don’t start loosening restrictions by February/March we are goin to start seeing waves of losses as many have given up. The vax is the ONLY hope they have right now.

No as not an elderly person or an essential worker or a medical one. But when they become available will do so. Need to.

I got an email today saying that so far our hospital has already vaccinated 3000 staff. I'm getting my second dose on January 6th and will continue to vaccinate other staff on my day off. I also asked administration if we will be vaccinating the public and said I would be interested in doing those vaccines when the time comes.

We actually had to fill out paperwork for the state and show our hospital ID badge? No badge, no shot!
So funny. The person who checked me in for my shot is someone who works on the admin side of our ER. (I'm a charge nurse for several years). Even though every person at that table knew me and has for years, I still had to show my badge at check in.

My first vaccine is done! I received the Pfizer vaccine this morning. My hospital is vaccinating at our state fair grounds. It’s drive-through, you don’t even get out of your car. I have my appointment for my second vaccine next month. 6 hours later I have a bit of a headache and some soreness in the arm, worse than a flu shot but not as bad as a TDaP.

How are they watching for vaccine reactions if everyone is driving through?

I am in the Pfizer Covid-19 clinical trial and had my second shot in October. Although it’s a blinded study, I know I got the vaccine because of the immune response and an antibody test. My 16 year old son is also in the trial, and he received the vaccine also. He has a volleyball tournament in Orlando in January, so the two of us are going to Disney World for 2 days after it ends. We are putting our antibodies to good use and taking advantage of the lower capacity, still taking precautions of course!

Yes, but maybe rather than a visit through a window or a 30 minute visit once a week outside on the porch in December visits could be upgraded to a visit in the resident’s warm apartment once a week. It’s small tweaks we are hoping for not fully opening the spigot so to speak.

The whole progression is:
Drive in and get directed to a lane where you wait in line, moving up bit by bit. As you move up you come to a person who checks you in and sets up your appointment for vaccine #2, they also give you info on v-safe. Then you get to the injection area where they review your paperwork and double check your allergies and risks. You get the vaccine and they put the time on a sticky note on your windshield. You then drive a short way to another line where you wait 15 minutes. If you start to have a reaction you honk your horn and put on your hazard lights. As each person reaches the 15 minute mark, someone comes over and checks to make sure you’re okay then you drive away.
This was replicated in 3 different areas so they were able to move quite a few people through. The whole process took about an hour and 15 minutes.

My dad texted me today and said the majority of workers at my grandmas LTC facility aren’t getting the vaccine :-( She was supposed to get hers last week, but it got delayed. I hope they get to the residents soon since the workers don’t want it. None of the people that care for her personally are going to get it.

Oh wow. Since residents are most at risk from the people who work there, that's really disappointing. What a waste.
