August 2017 Disneyland Check-In & Chat!

Three weeks from today!!! So excited, and having such a hard time containing myself. Don't have anyone to talk to about it, b/c it's a big surprise for DD (and DH is not that interested - thus the Mommy/Daughter trip).

I'm excited that we seemed to have hit the sweet spot this summer, with all the ROA attractions being scheduled to open before we arrive, but all the other closures not happening until after we leave. (Just wish I could have done Hyperspace Mtn.!) Last year we had our first trip to WDW and got there 3 days after MSEP closed, missed Fantasmic!, and BTMR was closed. Going to make up for lost time! It's been 22 years since I've been to DL!! Can't wait!!

We usually vacation in June or July. I am feeling like August is NEVER going to get here!!!! Time is slowly inching by. Inching, my friends!

I'm in this like bizarre time loop - it's both crawling and moving too quickly! I work in July, and the first of the two two week programs I do ends today, so now I'm in the 'two more weeks of work then it's packing time!' loop. I also have some personal, work-related things that I've been so focused on that I feel like it's made everything move super slow because I've been so focused on it.

Then, of course, I freak out that the last round of things I ordered won't be here in time. Eek!

Oh, that's a good place to be! And we've hit the sweet spot before (and will be again, we're 25 days out) and it's a great place to be, believe me!

I know. I feel bad for others with unexpected closings, but I can't believe that we've finally hit the sweet spot after lots of bad timing at WDW over the years. Our last WDW trip was when paper FP were gone but you couldn't book more than your three FP. Walking past BTMRR with a 60 minute+ standby and being restricted to three FP+ per day (when we only had one day at MK) was the worst. And it was totally our choice to make most of our WDW trips in mid-Jan, but it'll be nice to be at Disney when it isn't closure season.

My youngest says she doesn't want to know anything about the rides or what we're doing because she wants to be surprised, but I'm having trouble keeping my mouth shut. I can't imagine keeping the entire trip a surprise! I was bouncing off the walls yesterday because I remembered that I get to ride Soarin over the World for the first time. My kids think I'm a bit crazy.

We are going too! August 23-25, with 2 day park hoppers, staying at the Candy Cane Inn. First trip for me to Disneyland, after many to DW in FL. This is the first leg of our 10 day trip in CA, heading up the coast after. Very excited! I am just now looking at park strategies and trip reports. Any suggestions welcome!

We are now 6 weeks away (end of August so a longer wait than most of you). We weren't planning on telling our kids for a few weeks but they noticed the schedule at camp and asked why it says they aren't there for part of it (i.e. we're taking them out a bit early from full session). Oops. My younger one especially keeps asking why...so telling them tomorrow. I came up with a scavenger hunt with hiding "the prize" at the last location - which is a collage of pictures of Disneyland, Universal, Warner Brothers and a few other Hollywood pictures (since Disney is part of a longer trip for us).

One thing that concerns me is I am having bad feet issues. They are so sore and burning....which is not good having painful feet even before you get on the plane. I've purchased about 5 new pairs of shoes trying to find what will work best. I've gone to the dr but of course it's a matter of waiting for a specialist appointment which I was told will take weeks...so don't think this will be resolved by our trip. Just hope it's not a downer as I'm in quite a bit of pain just sitting here.

Other than that...it's great with all the excitement for all of us as August comes near for our trip!

I'm so sorry you are having foot problems. Do you know what the issue is? My husband swears by his Keen sandals for his Plantar Fasciitis. I broke my toe a week before our last Disney trip and I was so upset. The only shoes I could wear the whole trip were my yellow Crocs that I wear to garden in. It turns out they were really really comfortable. If they weren't so ugly I would wear them again...in fact, they may make it into the car as a backup!

Anyway, hope your feet improve before the trip.

Thanks Butterfly. I just hope it doesnt ruin (or put a damper on) our trip. I've heard Keen shoes are good. At the moment I need to keep my toes open so am stuck with thong type shoes (which I never wear). I'm going for testing but most likely nerve issues. That's awful that you broke your toe right before your trip. Ouch. :-(

Fun we are a mother daughter trip also with my 9 yo turning 10 while there, so excited for our first DLR trip.
Hi there! Another mother-daughter trip with a nine-year-old here! We're making a short trip August 16-18. I'm thinking about doing a VIP tour because it's close to my 50th bday. The tour costs the same whether it's 1, 2, or 10 people - any chance you and your daughters would be interested in joining and splitting this with us? I realize it's expensive but thought I would ask, as you never know....

You might have read here that Sunday, Aug. 27th, is the annual CHOC Walk fundraiser at DLR. The parks and the ticket booths will be crowded that day. Do your research, make your plans, and use your knowledge to your advantage. If you can get your tickets ahead so that you can go right to the turnstiles, that will save you lots of time in line at the booths on Sunday.

Where are the best places to get tickets that go straight to the turnstiles. I see there are a lot of options, the hotels, aRes, etc.... Now trying to weight if MP is worth it or not also and which ones are able to offer it?????

Check Mousesavers.com to see who's offering good deals right now on multi-day tickets. Getawaytoday.com, aRes.com, LMT.com, AAA, etc. all offer discounted tickets. If the ticket voucher has a bar code, you can take it straight to the gates. If you have to exchange it at the ticket booth, try to do it the night before. The booths stay open one hour after park closing.

Really disappointed that the parks aren't opening until 10 on the 27th. I expected that the rest of the week but not on a Sunday. It also shows magic morning in Disneyland that day even though it's a Sunday. Any chance this is a mistake?!

It is probably not an error. That's the day of the CHOC Walk and two years ago when we were there they switched the early entry park that day. I think it's because the walk finished up in DCA. Others here would know if they did the same last year. It will be crowded! Not just in the parks but in DTD and the Esplanade too. I can see the new security locations might ease that quite a bit though.

A little over 5 weeks to go! I snagged a better departure flight so happy about that, but it means no pool/beach day. After back and forth with several hotel choices, decided on a 2BR @ Camelot. I still have Hyatt House booked if I change my mind again, lol. I did end up telling my oldest that we're going to Disneyland; the other kids still think we're going to WDW. They'll figure it out once we're on the plane. Or once we get there. It'll be a nice surprise.

Not happy to hear this, but definitely good to know. Thanks!

Do you think the 27th with the CHOC walk will be less crowded than Friday the 1st with the marathon? Do they usually open late for the marathon too?

I've been waiting for today to check the hours on the 27th, our first park day. Super disappointed to see that it's 10am on a Sunday. Was thinking it would be 8am (and like you, expected the rest of the week to be later). We are there from Sunday to Wednesday (4 day, non hopper tickets.. as it's my son's first visit (he's 5 and has a physical disability, so I didn't think we would take advantage of hopping very much.. and the 4 day non hoppers were cheaper than 3 day hoppers!). Anyhow.. this whole 10am opening on Sunday with a magic morning at Disneyland is throwing me off! I really don't know how I will schedule our days now.. we want to do a character breakfast at Minnies (the Plaza) and was potentially going to do that on Sunday.. a late 10:30 breakfast, thinking the park would open at 8:00. Back to the drawing board!

I understand the changing of magic morning to Disneyland on this day.. but why would they make it a 10am opening?! Won't that make the craziness (with the CHOC walk) even worse?? I just checked the historical hours thread and as far back as it goes (to 2009).. the last Sunday in August has always been an 8:00am opening. Dang it.

The GOOD NEWS is.. Haunted Mansion is showing open for August 27, and I was totally expecting it to be already down for refurb/overlay during our trip. I expect it will likely close down the next day (Monday the 28th).. but at least we can ride it our first day. My 5 year old is very small for his age.. (not yet at the magical height of 40" for the 'bigger' rides).. so I love that he can do Haunted Mansion :D

I know, I'm really disappointed too. My toddler is used to napping at noon CST, which means the park opens right at her normal nap time. The CHOC walk is usually later in the year so it wasn't even on my radar.
