Get Excited: Downtown Disney Has Now Reopened Superthread!

Too bad they don’t replace the long and tedious bag check queues. So now you have bag check, temp check, metal detectors plus new scanner?
I wish Disney would bring in the airport bag scanner like Universal has done. Significantly cuts down time.
See the posts below for photos and explanation.
The order of security for DTD is 3 tents in this order: temp check, new scanner, bag check/metal detector. Going through all 3 (if you don't get stopped) takes about 3-5 minutes on average.
The long, switchback queue (which mainly happens on weekends) is due to capacity limitations in DTD. The line must be held until enough people leave the DTD District so that more people can enter. Once enough people leave, a certain number of new guests will be allowed to go through security. When large numbers of guests arrive (e.g. after work on a Friday or on a Saturday evening), there are way more arrivals than departures. Thus the long switchback queues.

It came up in the DLR Reopening Superthread that not everyone is familiar with the security/bag check process for DTD. For those who might be wondering how the procedure goes now:

From the MP DLR Update (7/13-19/20):
Arrival and screening
The new measures are noticeable as you arrive to Downtown Disney, with street signs advising that masks are required to enter the area. After parking in the Downtown Disney lot, signs guide visitors to the first of three screening tents. Disney has partnered with Hoag Health to conduct the temperature screenings, which are done with a handheld, no-contact temperature scanner.

Visitors are then asked to take any bags or backpacks off their shoulders before passing through the next checkpoint, staffed by Disney security and specially trained "vapor wake" dogs. Disney has used these dogs since 2015 to help detect explosives that might be worn on the body or concealed in baggage.

Finally, visitors go to the now-familiar bag check tents and pass their bags underneath a plexiglass barrier to a waiting cast member, who examines the bag and passes it back. After a walk through the metal detector, it's on to Downtown Disney. The whole process took just minutes during two visits last week, though the wait to get to the first checkpoint can vary quite a bit depending on how many people are in line. With groups asked to maintain social distance of six feet between parties, it's fairly difficult to estimate just how long of a wait any given line really represents.

It's a possibility but I foresee this just creating more traffic on Katella which Anaheim probably wouldn't be happy with.
True! I've noticed that the street that takes you to Simba has cones and APD, and huge sign that says parking may pause at capacity. Doubt they would want to do all of that on Katella as well. Guess we will just have to wait and see. I've been thinking about when they were going to increase the capacity.

MousePlanet reported on this back on 8/03/20 and it was posted in this thread. See bolded, underlined sections below. It's taking them a long time to open!

From today's (8/03/20) MP DLR Update:

Downtown Disney extends operating hours; updates mask policy again
The Downtown Disney district at Disneyland announced extended shopping hours last week, and has once more updated its health and safety guidelines for visitors.
Last Friday, the Disneyland Resort announced that Downtown Disney would open at 10:00 a.m. daily, and remain open until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. This change comes a week after the Downtown Disney district welcomed back two dining establishments: Tortilla Jo's and Ballast Point Brewing Co.

It's worth noting that each independent operator sets its own hours, and not all locations open and/or close with Downtown Disney. For example, Sugarboo & Co. has been opening at noon on weekdays, and the Downtown Disney West location of Starbucks isn't open everyday. Disney recommends downloading the official Disneyland smartphone app to get current store hours and dining information.

Disneyland also issued a second update to the requirement that all patrons age 2 and older wear a face covering. In addition to the first update, which banned neck gaiters and bandanna-style masks, Disney is now disallowing use of masks that have "valves, mesh material, or holes of any kind." It may seem incredible that Disney has to specifically ban mesh masks, but we watched last week as a guest was asked to change masks after attempting to enter Downtown Disney wearing an loose crochet mask with nothing under it. For now, Disney's guest relations team can provide visitors with an appropriate mask if they arrive wearing one of the disallowed styles.

Visitors will also notice temporary digital message boards on Disneyland Drive and Katella Avenue, which are used to alert drivers when Disney has temporarily paused entry to Downtown Disney due to capacity limits. Disney is adding a new entrance to the Downtown Disney parking lot from Katella Avenue, and has filed permits to install two new toll booths. Workers were installing the monument sign at the entrance last week.
