Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

don't be too sad that race sold out. I ran it last year when it was the national marathon/half (i ran the half) and honestly it was just one hot mess. first i was put in the wrong corral (which I don't understand how that happened since we had to provide proof of time to even enter the race but whatever) so there was a ton of congestion in the beginning. the course had NO mile markers - thank goodness for my garmin. the water stations were understaffed, so i had to literally stop and wait for a cup to be filled at the stops. there was also a relay, and there relay transition zones were placed in the most asinine spots so the course was very congested in the worst spots (i particularly remember trying to kick it in for the last 5K only there was no where to go.) and once you got to the finish area, it was so backlogged and took forever to get out there. my boyfriend was actually really starting to get worried what was taking so long. the worst part about all the course nonsense was that i was only 2 minutes off my PR, so who knows what would of happened if it ran smoothly.

Anyways, I'm sure rock n roll will take care of these logistical issues and it will go much more smoothly this year, but I would still prefer to play a wait-and-see game with this one.

No mile markers? I'm out! Thanks for making me feel better about missing it! :) I did a 10k in November with no mile markers, it seriously makes it feel so much longer!

Anyone know a good website that has race reviews? I'm looking for good local 10K's and halfs to consider for this summer. (Anyone know anything about the Twin Lights half in Gloucester?)

Oh no! That race definitely needed some help. Hopefully competitor can help some of the mistakes from last year, but if the course is narrow and there are too many runners, it's kind of hard to fix that. This will only be my second RNR event, but my first was also an inaugural event and it went pretty well. Considering I was pulling up the back of the pack for the marathon, I wasn't too surprised they were out of heat sheets, and there weren't any finisher shirts left in the merch. tent, but other than that I didn't see any problems. I know the 1/2 was a different story because they ran out of medals :scared1: Hopefully it'll go well, I'll be sure to report back about it!

So I finally got my race report up with pictures today. I haven't had internet so blogging's been a bit of a pain, but that's all fixed now. So click the link below to see what I thought about the race and some of my pics!

yes! please report back. it's such a great time of year in DC (cherry blossom festival!) that I would love to do the race again - but i'm def a bit weary. did rock and roll cut out the relay? that would help a ton i think. also perhaps rock and roll capped it at a lower number.

i know lots of runners knock rock and roll, but i've only run one rock and roll event (new orleans) and i had a good experience. i wouldn't chase across the country and run a million of their races (unless someone wants to fund me :lmao: ), but i wouldn't necessarily avoid their races, either. as long as i have my space to run, i don't mind some hoopla. and if i'm traveling for a race to begin with, the race fee is what it is since the travel costs are likely a much bigger deal to me than the actual race fee.

Got the trip report started! No real pictures from the trip yet (though you can see one of my gorgeous photos that Brightroom snapped from Tinkerbell) but I will either post the first real part tonight or tomorrow sometime during the day.

I Regret NOTHING or How One Girl Rediscovers the Magic!!! A Feb 2012 Trip Report

OK looking at your pic, I swear I saw you at the parks!! Were you at the MK on Saturday morning right as the park had just about opened and you were near Space Mt gettting a FP?? You look so familiar, it had to be you!!

Sorry about the bags ladies. Seems there maybe some greedy eBay princesses.
Sadly I agree with you. I was trying to get a wristlet for a friend who was coming in a little later and when I got there I saw a lady with one, turned around and there was the table, one lady looked at one the last one and put it down and the lady in front of me, who already had one, snagged it up, looked at the price tag and rolled her eyes making some comment about a $50profit . I didn't really hear her clearly, but of course the first thing that popped into my head was eBay.

Now when I look on ebay, just out of curiosity, and I see the wristlets listed for $95 it makes me sick. I really wish people would just stop buying them from eBay at such crazy mark ups and then they would be stuck with them and then maybe they would stop doing it.

We attended the Expo yesterday and got there at opening time. My daughter and I liked the shirts and bought several. I also purchased a DB cross body bag. I did see several people with their arms full of bags, so perhaps EBay will be busy. Too bad they do not limit the Princesses...too many were greedy.

I totally agree. They should do a limit of 1 of each kid of bag or something. I also like the pre-order for runners idea. I didn't care all that much for the princess design, but I am kicking myself over Tinker Bell. If they ever release it again I will definitely get one.

Lessons learned:

- Bring my desired fueling method. I forgot to do this today, and I do NOT like the gel!!

Oh, and I got my CtC medal today. That was cool. :woohoo:

Congrats on your C2C!! I got mine too! I was kind of surprised at how the CMs had no idea what it was, then I realized this was the first time they had seen them since you use to have to do a WDW race first and then get C2C at DL 1/2, so I cut them some slack. ;)

I do not like gels either, but I figured I wouldn't so I have always brought my own energy boost of choice. Last year was shot bloks, this year I opted for gummy bears. :thumbsup2

We took the bus from POFQ, man traffic was nuts. At the bus before 4, got off bus walked straight to the portapotties by corrals, lines not bad, then walked to corral. Race started shortly after which was nice since it was cold...we were in the bus a while. Wondering if anyone walked frm POFQ to corrals, as MAN they were close!

Thanks to Bellerunner and Patti from TX for the shoutout today! This mulan had a blast and SO happy my prince was one of the heroes! ;-)

Glad I didn't deal with that parking lot this year....last year was a cluster as well.....though MAN the wait for the bus though not too bad was COLD!

See you guys next year....took a ton of pics, so will let you know when Blog or video if I do it is done.

I loved how the Fairy Godmother told me in Epcot as we left...."Go do honor to us all".

We were on the same bus heading back to the resorts! Patty pointed you out to me but you guys were already off the bus at the time, I totally forgot I was going to keep an eye out for ya. :rolleyes1

I was super stressed with the whole morning bus situation. I was on the bus at 3:30- 3:40 and didn't get off until just about 4:30. That traffic was crazy. I didn't have that problem last year. I guess next time I will just have to head out even earlier.

I was totally wishing I had walked, but I had my mom (not running) with me.

Hi and Congrats !!! I met you at the WISH meet before the Tink 1/2. Glad to took your Tink medal to WDW. I would love to hear what race you enjoyed more.

I've got a question about the Coast to Coast....when you signed up for both Tink and the Princess, on what race sign up did you mark that you will be participating in the Coast to Coast ??
I'm confused if you mark both or just the last race that will qualify you for the C2C ? Thanks

I think I marked it on both, but you only need to on the second one.

Trying to approach my parents about doing the Tower of Terror 10 miler (admittedly my Mom was the one who originally brought this up). I would really like to be able to do the Disney Halloween festivities just once (I've never been to either holiday party).

I have been considering this too. I don't think I am going to be able to make it work this year since we plan on selling our house and moving to a different state so too much is up in the air right now to commit.

oh and just for the record -just checked ebay and the princess crossbody is going for 250$ a shame Disney did not limit the number you could buy-really had my heart set on the cross body- oh well next year- I already have the Disney black barrel, the dcl and Dream bag and 2 wristlets.:lovestruc

Yeah it is quite sad. I had no idea they were going to be at the Tink and I had a chance to get one but couldn't commit and then they were gone. Next year I am keeping my eye out for them and if I like it I will go there first thing and worry about my bib after :rotfl:

DIS-OH........
Did you have to jump over the fencing? next year I want to stay at POFQ and just walk too!

JOAN...I think we were in the bus after you. We were in the front and our driver was NOT happy about the traffic and how they route buses and cars the same direction!

Our driver wasn't happy either. She had said that she had got stuck at the same spot for 45 minutes during marathon weekend. She ended up going to the far left lane going past the turn off, doing a u-turn, and coming back so that she could turn left and merged in much quicker.

I swore last year there were separate bus and car lanes and the buses dropped off somewhere different.

It was Sherry Feathers - she posted this on the FB RunDisney page: (hope it's okay to share, I know there were several people that saw her and were worried about her!)

was so ready to defend my first place title from 2009 ...my nickname is pitter patter...but it now is changed to pItter splatter...I tripped only two miles in ... awesome medical help, nice ride in the ambulance..sweet celebration emergency room...have a fractured shoulder/humerus bone, checked the Disney results...darn, i would have placed if i finished...oh well....SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!

Poor girl! I felt so bad for her.

No fence jumping required!

After we crossed the bridge, we took a right turn and walked toward the start line. When we reached the start line, we just walked across the road and then walked down the corral entrance side. There were plenty of officials/volunteers that were pointing to where we should go.

There was a steady stream of walkers coming over the bridge...we even saw some walking up the road from Old Key West. Also saw a large group in the parking lot of POFQ...suspect they drove there and parked just for the race as they were parked in the section closest to Bonnet Creek Parkway and furthest from the resort buildings.

Good to hear. If I make it to the Princess next year I want to give this a try. This year was way to stressful for me.

AnotherPrincess, apparently they were only giving out the blankets if you got a massage. This was my first Disney run, so I don't know if they ever gave them out for free before. Best to bring your own for the ToT race, if you think it might be a problem. I think it was made worse this year because it was starting to rain right when I finished, so it was getting a little chilly again. The end of September in Central FL can still be pretty warm though.

I didn't see them last year either, but we did have them at Tink, for everyone.

You might also check some pictures from bib numbers similar to yours if you can't find your pictures in the lost and found section. I had a picture of someone who had bib 924, and mine was 934. They were in a hurry to get them on the web I'm sure, so there could have been some typos when categorizing them. I doubt this ladies picture will come up in the lost and found since they marked it as being me, it's too bad too because it's a cute picture!

I have one of those too. It's a pirate one and they put it on my page with my results :(

Do you pass OKW when walking from POFQ? We were staying at OKW and wished we had walked. The walk from gear check to the corrals was absolutely insane.

I completely agree that there were a lot fewer characters, and less race entertainment in general. I was also disappointed in both the race shirt and the swag (or lack thereof).

The corral walk was ridiculous!! It took me over an hour!! We did a shuffle shuffle stand around for 5 minute ratio for the first 45 minutes or so. I got to my corral (C) 5 minutes before the race was suppose to start! The wheelchair person already left and I missed the national anthem.

Is anyone else having Princess withdrawals??? I need a new race to sign up for ASAP!

Ha ha ha ME! I was looking at races the other night. I didn't find anything all that exciting, though. I am pretty Disney spoiled.

POFQ is "around the corner" from OKW, so you don't pass by it when walking from POFQ.

To walk from OKW...go out the front entrance and turn left on Vacation Club Way. Cross over Bonnet Creek Parkway and continue straight across the canal bridge. The start corrals are on Epoct Center Drive, just past the bridge.

A few days late, but from what I can tell, it's even closer from OKW than it is from POFQ? Basically just straight across the bridge.

Considering how absolutely nuts it was in the death march from the parking lot, next year we may seriously consider it. Any objections from any Disney employees or do they pretty much turn their head?

I know! I'm glad people are running but last minute planning stinks..and there's no way I would have signed up for 2 halves without completing one!

I signed up for 2 halves AND 2 fulls before I ran my first half! In fact, I signed up for one of each before I ran my first 5K! It's called having something on your calendar to provide motivation to your training.

One half down at least 3 more races to go this year!

I give you so much credit! I didn't want to get too far ahead of myself! :rotfl:

I signed up for my second half. It's in April. I'm so excited, my sister and cousin are running it too!

I think we all need to e:mail RunDisney and "suggest" that they make the purses available to the runners/walkers at the time of registration (as they do the pins/necklaces).
That way, they are guaranteed to go to the people who really earn them by paying for the event. And they will have the money ahead of time.
Then they have extras available for sale at the Expo for anyone else who decides to purchase them and for the "others" who want to resale them (although I don't think that's fair).

I was there when the Expo opened and it was a feeding frenzy. At the very least, they should have a cuing line (Disney is the best at that, right?) so make it not such a mad dash.

Just my thoughts!

There are some good reasons to make people pick up limited edition merch in person, none the least being to have the best draw for the expo. That being said, I think that things like D&B stuff should have been available 1.) limited to only one of each style 2.) sold at the expo only to registered runners 3.) require the presentation of a bib for purchase 4.) only after the close of the expo will any remaining inventory be released to the public for sale.

While someone could still go through the trouble of registering, picking up their bib, and then buying one of each, it would discourage eBay speculators and drive up the investment to the point that there would be no profit in the resale.

The walk to the corral was redonkulous. I really hope they move the porta potties back or something. That seemed to be the hang up for the bottle neck, it opened right up once you passed those porta potties on the right.

I have to admit the bus situations doesn't bother me- my goal is to be on the last bus or 2 from my resort. I'm never in an early corral so that gives me plenty of time. I guess I'd worry more if I thought Disney would close the bag check before the last of their busses arrive but I can't imagine them doing it. It really did seem like a march this year from the parking lot to the corrals and the porta potty placement was an issue as the lines blocked the road.

As it was I left our room at AKL about 10 to 4 stopped and used the rest room in the lobby and met the girls there to head to the bus- one left and the next was there- we got on and were at the start in plenty of time to check bags, hit the porta pots and walk to the corrals. We stood in corrals for an hour before the start anyway.

I don't mind being one of the last out of the resort- although the weather was great this year- I've stood hours at the start of Disney races in the sleet, snow and 20 degree temps. The less time I stand in a corral the better to me.

We were in one of the earlier corrals, and literally got into our corral with about 5-10 min to spare before it left, at maybe 5:45. That was with leaving the resort at 4:10 (driving from OKW, so not like it's far), getting into the staging area at about 4:30, not checking a bag, and hitting the porta potties twice.

It seems pretty ridiculous that it took over an hour from parking lot to corral to do that. The last two years have not been that bad at all.

I looked back at the previous years results to see how many runner each year. It has continued to grow each year. I drove the first year...just over 6000 runners and it was a piece of cake in and out. Next two years I stayed at All Stars...busy buses for expo and race, but never really any delays. Walk to corral fine. This year....stayed at POFQ. Buses great to expo and race. I did get a bus around 3:30..lots of ladies waiting and several buses lined up. It took quite a while to get to Epcot area and the walk from bus to staging area was longer this year. I believe they let us out where we were let out for the full marathon. The walk was like the walk to the full in Jaunuary...very slow. I think the first porta potties on the walk to the corral were new this year and a really BAD idea. Solutions? IDK. But being on the bus...which was nice to be sitting in a comfortable place was fine...I used the porta potties behind corrals a-e?. They weren't too bad and was in corral a 15 min before race start.
One annoyance was girls coming "back" (wrong way) with corrals E, F, etc on bib when we were trying to get past c and b to our corral.

Yeesh! I'll second this. If they feel porta potties are absolutely necessary, then face them away from the road. If they want to keep upping the number of registrants, then keep the road clear so people have a chance to get to their corrals with time to spare. I was still scrambling towards my corral during the national anthem, trying to avoid yet more porta potties
