For a "news" outlet, sensationalism is not doing the job correctly. We have enough of that garbage being spewed.

When you think of these issues, there's been two incidents in the last two years??? Considering the miles, and usage these vehicles get, that's pretty impressive.

2 incidents in 2 years? You make it sound like the monorail fleet runs perfectly all day, everyday save for 2 exceptions. It doesn’t... at all.

I don’t know what 2 incidents you’re counting but my tally is at least 5 in the last two years: the coral crash, 2 evacs, the large piece falling off, and now this. The scary thing is these incidents are becoming more and more frequent.

Clean monorail smell is good, some report distinct odors inside the monorail cars. Can't say I've experienced this myself.:)

It does have a distinct odour. It may be a urinish type smell. I guess I just like it. I probably shouldn't admit that. :hyper:

I just don't like it when there is no air circulating. I've been on super hot monorails, where I can't smell anything. I just notice the oppressive heat, and this leads to my sense of panic. A slightly opened door would be a welcome relief.

I agree in a general sense, but I don’t mind Disney getting overly schlacked for this. They’ve let these trains die a slow death way past their operational life

"Or any number of things could have happened." But they didn't
Things "almost happen" everyday

The coral crash was in 2009.

Is there any indication of what caused the door to open? IG is blocked at work.

Those doors are able to be opened from the inside for safety reasons, and cannot be "locked" in the closed position. How it opened is the crux of the whole thing. I find it odd, that a system with redundancies, would have one set of doors just open. Anyone that's rode a monorail knows all the doors open and close in unison.

I was waiting for the monorail one time and the door I was standing in front of didn't open at all. All the other doors did.

The door wouldn’t close at station. Engineers finally forced it closed but evidently whatever they did to get it to close didn’t stick.
I have zero idea which monorail it was, but we were at the GF in Nov and the door to our car kept popping open. A CM eventually came over and tried forcing it shut several times before it finally worked. We got off at MK so idk if there were any further problems.

Seriously, who in the hell made that call ? Its not as if they have a problem with other brands popping up everywhere in the parks these days !

This was just a rumor though and there was likely no truth to it.

It is so refreshing to read most people here agreeing that this could’ve been a huge tragedy and a big deal. One of the Disney news pages posted this and I was amazed at the number of internet trolls saying this was no big deal and not scary and not news.

This could’ve been a gigantic tragedy. So thankful it wasn’t.

What coverage? The article that said people were "holding onto whatever was near hoping they wouldn't fall out of the car."

Give me a break.

And yes, I am serious. No one in this situation was in any danger. Let me ask you this, how many times have you been thrown against the monorail doors during a normal ride? I imagine zero. People need to stop thinking that EVERYTHING is a death trap. Use common sense. If a door opens up during a ride, STAY AWAY FROM IT!

I swear, it's like people have lost all common sense.

You’re assuming everyone has common sense.... Disney has to think about the percentage of the population that doesn’t have any common sense.

If this train had been packed like sardines, someone could’ve easily fallen out. I’ve seen people lean against those doors frequently in packed cars. I’ve also had standing guests push my stroller toward the doors in a packed car, and I’ve seen lots of strollers with children strapped inside pushed up to the doors. Smart? No. But the way they cram people in at peak times..... no melodrama, I’m just saying this could’ve been dangerous given the correct circumstances. Fortunately this was a non crowded train and it turned out ok.

Great post. Admittedly, I am a bit taken aback by the number of DISers who are defending this. I naively thought that if there was one thing we all would be complete agreement on, it would be this. But I was wrong. This is not just a random technical failure, this is negligence.

Out of curiosity, I clicked over to another well-known WDW forum to see what the split was like over there. It was very different. I didn’t notice any defenders, and if there was a defensive post, it was meant sarcastically. Interesting.

Anyway, while reading that thread, I learned the new stickers (the ones WDWNT are reporting to be put up in response to this incident) have actually been there for months. There are posters also reporting that doors being open during motion is not a new occurrence and has happened before. This is just the first time it was caught on social media. Finally, posters are also reporting to seeing monorail doors actually duct taped shut during their trips. So the idea that the monorail is being held together by bandaids is not too far off. o_O

Rainy day would work for me too!

I was kinda hoping the Skyliner was more "open" than it appears it will be as well. :sad2:

Not unsafe fallout type, but nice open air WDW views for that wonderful FL weather-except summer afternoons of course. :crazy2:

Yeah, there is no way I'm going to be getting in that Gondola. The rest of my family will give it a go though.
