Article about DCL "reality" on Yahoo! "news"

I do, however, agree that their lack of evening buffets are a bummer

Me too! About the only thing the author got right was the crowds around the pool. Oh...and really there aren't enough seats in the waiting area at PC. Otherwise the article is really slim on information!

They weren't wrong about Castaway Cay get very crowded at times.

It can get crowded but the picture they had wasn't even that crowed.

And was that buffet even disney? Unless it's an old pic from before they redid the magic and wonder. Now that all 4 ships have cabanas they don't have buffet tables in front of the window.

What do they mean some customers may find the buffet a little lacking?!! Those are all desserts in that picture. What else is needed?!!

Seriously though, yes, the article has zero credibility and integrity but the reality is Disney is really bad for creating completely fake scenarios in their marketing campaigns and children, who don't know it's all lies, go to Disney and are left disappointed. I warned my granddaughters Cinderella would not be standing on Main Street ready to welcome them to Magic Kingdom with a joyful hug, that instead we would be going to visit her in her castle for an autograph and photo (and hug) but friends didn't and had a child sit in the middle of Main Street and refuse to move because she was waiting for Cinderella.

Personally, I would like to see a little more honesty and integrity in advertising/marekting as well as journalism.

On our cruise in Dec 2008 on the Disney Magic, a dessert buffet was served on the deck for Pirate night and I believe that dining experience is what is in the picture.

Enjoy this snarky article on the "reality" of a Disney Cruise -- compares 'fake' photos with 'real' photos.

I don't see anything "false" per say as the terminal, pool, cc are indeed crowded (although when it comes to crowded spaces I've seen worst that what I am seeing in the picture!) but in my opinion, the article is badly written. It's super lazy (she chose the first picture fitting her narrative without doublechecking), lacks research ("And if you're sharing the port, you'll probably be sharing beach space and excursions as well" Huh... not just "probably" LOL) and omits a lot of important details... The most important being: all cruise lines are like that!

The DCL commercial doesn't represent reality perfectly (Just take a look at Castaway Cays picture on the DCL website. I've never seen the family beach that empty). But it's like that for most products... They all polish reality/photoshop, etc. Don't blame DCL, blame marketing!

i assumed it was bought and paid for my RCL/NCL/Carnival :)

I don't think other cruise lines needs to do that in order to get passengers and I would be disappointed if that was the case.

It's clickbait at his best. They picked something people love and associate with happiness and then speak against it to make sure people will click on the link.

EDIT: Unfortunately we clicked and we are here, talking about it. They won.

It is false that the photo depicted the terminal represents the Port Canaveral terminal when the photo is of the Miami terminal.

It is false that the photo depicting a buffet represents Disney Cruise Line buffets when the photo is of late night specialty buffet on Pirate night.

Marketing, whether in-house or out, only comes up with the campaigns, it is the company that green lights it, making it their responsibility.

My point was:

"Not "false" per say": yes, the terminal is crowded; yes, the pool is crowded; yes, Castaway Cay is crowded; yes the food selection is a little bit meh (based on my experience with DCL vs Carnival)...

"Lazy and lack of research": some pictures are wrong and they obviously picked those that fit their narrative without double checking their sources/quality of information.

P.s.: This is a forum/board, not a thesis!

I would've thought so, but since there wasn't a picture comparing prices... :)

Fake news!
Fake in a couple of places, and easily remedied had this article been more about reporting than a clickbait photo essay (and not surprisingly, a poor one. They almost always are.). If you can google "cruise terminal port canaveral" you can surely take the extra step to verify that the photo was, in fact, taken at Port Canaveral.

But anyway, the point is that none of the pictures are "fake". I suppose you could make a case for the promo photos being fake, but that's pretty much par for the course with promo photos.

Moving along, I look forward* to the next article from this aspiring Yahoo journalist. Perhaps we can delve into how the Big Mac in the promo photos doesn't look like the Big Mac we eat.

I wouldn’t consider a few picture captions an article. Either way, truly underwhelming. I’ll think of the author when I’m In Northern Europe next week - not.

I thought the best part was they had to go back 2 years to reference a norovirus outbreak of 100 people. I'm pretty sure some other cruise lines have those outbreaks like every month. With more than 100 sick.
Oh I’m sure they’ll repurpose this article for the other lines. They’ll just find photos to match the words (or change a couple of words around)

Every month I doubt it but if it was the case, that info would be super easy to find on the CDC website. ;)

This.

I wouldn't be shocked if someone found a previous article with pretty much the same content, simply "reassigned" with info regarding DCL.

From what I read on these boards there was an issue recently where many people were very sick BUT most were after disembarkation. So no "official" record. And the amount of people sick was over the CDC limit.

Port of Miami is where that photo was taken. It is a temporary building as DCL only sails out of there a few months out of the year.

Sorry about that -- it's been years since I've been at PC. Thanks for clearing that up -- but they still made it look pathetic.

Does Disney still do the midnight dessert extravaganza?

ALL the other cruise lines have advertising that does not mirror reality. They all present the ideal.

What in advertising is 100% true? Not much. Just google preparing "food" for photography and commercials. It's almost never a legit, could-be-eaten food - the "milk" in cereal ads is glue, etc.

There was a very similar "article" about cruising (in general) vs. reality. It was just as ridiculous.

Yes, sometimes advertising looks better than reality, this is pretty much true with everything. But it doesn't mean that the reality is not amazing. Of course, the "reality" in the article is trying to make the reality look its worst.

I felt the same too when I read this "article"....my departure is 15 days away on my first cruise ever and I knew not all of that is 100% accurate. Heck, you can probably fabricate an article like that about WDW. About how crowded it is and how hot it gets in Orlando etc...seriously its not all doom and gloom.

Well can't wait to experience my first cruise!!!
